Kitchen Renovation

I am really happy to find Downtown Flooring for our kitchen reno. Eric was prompt for my calls and questions, and the installers did a good, ontime and neat job.
Location is very convenient if you are in downtown so you can go and have a look at the samples. And way better products than Home Depot :) I would definitely recommend and will be happy to work with them again in my future projects.

Stairs transformation

We changed the carpet on the stairs to hardwood. Greg made sure we changed the picktes to squere style and we sanded the handreil to match the stair treads. Our painter did the pickets and risers white. It looks beautiful.

Unresponsive Owner and Faulty Service

I dealt with this company recently and had a very negative experience.

1) The installation happened 3 days late.
2) The installer arrived late on installation day.
3) There was 1 installer rather than the 3 promised.
4) It took the installer 8 hours rather than the quoted 3 hours .
5) I had to change the delivery and setup of furniture for the
room where the flooring was being installed 3x due to the installation delays.
6) The installer left a broken floor part
7) The flooring looks very different from each other

While Greg (an employee) was pleasant to deal with and always polite, the service itself in my personal experience was very poor.

Despite contacting the owner for some type of resolution on this issue, he has effectively ignored our concerns. I would not recommend this company.

Company Response

Hello,
First we regret any misfortune or issues this experience may have caused anyone. It is never our intention nor has it been for the last 65 years to set out to have any problems. As many of you know or have seen on TV the construction world sometimes is full of unforeseen things that change the original plan and timelines. Its really the nature of the business and in the middle of it all is sometimes hard to understand. Never planned at the beginning but sometimes just turns out that way. Of course during all of this I was on my personal 2 week annual family vacation. I really try my best to ( humm well disconnect ) from things. Again I know as the owner I should be working 24 / 7 no matter what but that really shouldn't be the case. I do not offer " some kind of resolution " or money back for these types of things. Our web site is very detailed as to " the construction process " as we want our customer to really understand what is involved. I personally do regret any issues this process may have caused and we do review these situations to learn as well as try to ensure they do not happen moving forward.
If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free contact me directly at steve@downtownflooring.ca or call me on my personal cell at 647-829-8344.
Sincerely: Steven Knab President of Downtown Flooring Co. Ltd.

Laying of flooring

A friend recommended Downtown Flooring but when I read the reviews, I was concerned. I went to their store and spoke to Karesz. His colleagued explained what happened and Kareszy gave me his personal guarantee that I would be happy with their work. He dropped off and picked up the floor samples, answered all questions promptly and was available whenever I needed to speak with him. He worked within my budget and recommended woods that would work with both the budget and the space.

On the day itself, the three-man team led by Wayne arrived on time at 8 a.m. We did a walk through my condo. They took up the carpet, moved the heavy furniture and were done by 2 p.m. The floors look great. I was hesitant but Karesz, Wayne and the team did a very good job. I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again.

Kitchen floor

Terrible experience. We booked in a kitchen floor renovation more than a month in advance and then Downtown Flooring cancelled the job less than three weeks before the start date because one of their crews was on vacation for a month and the other was on a bigger project than ours. I understand that they had some staff changeovers so there was a little confusion at the time in the office, but if a job is booked in, more than one person at the company should know about it. We also didn't appreciate the owner's immediate and unwarranted lack of trust in what we were saying when we called to complain about them ditching the job at short notice ("well I've only heard your side of the story..."). Stay far away.

Company Response

Yes "the staff changeovers" where the issue as this and many other jobs where left behind as a part of the x employee's plans to create as many issues as possible upon there departure. I gave 3 weeks notice as soon as I know we couldn't meet the timeline promised. I also ran an ad on 680 News to let our customers know as well.

Living room vinyl flooring

I needed 20y.o. carpeting removed and replace with some sort of hard flooring. Employees were friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating with my schedule. They recommended vinyl flooring as I am an active manual wheelchair user. They allowed me to take home samples. The installers were early the day of installation, and were friendly and very efficient. Had the flooring installed within six hours. Unfortunately, the flooring colour wasn't what I originally ordered. I understand that there has been a restructuring of staff recently and something was missed or overlooked. The president of the company offered replacement flooring, but I declined. The new flooring goes even better with my decor than what I originally ordered. So, I am more than satisfied with the way I was treated as a customer, and the products end result. Highly recommend this company.

Recent project in Toronto

What I liked: The quality and price, and the helpfulness of service when deciding on what I should get. Also, when I asked to keep the off-cuts they obliged. The deliveryman was very good.

What I didn't like so much:

1. Because Downtown Flooring are so busy, finalizing the paperwork and then getting the product took longer than expected, and required far more followup phone calls/emails from me than I would have liked (over weeks). They also often said they'd call back on a certain day and didn't.

2. The product they delivered was the wrong one on the first attempt. (They were able to correct this three days later, fortunately, though again it took more customer legwork than should have been the case.)

Summary: I'd definitely recommend you try Downtown Flooring if time is on your side and you have no deadlines.

Company Response

Hello, Yes as the owner of Downtown Flooring I have taken it upon myself to respond. We have had 2 employee's leave our store recently and dropped the ball on a this and more orders. We are in the midst of re structuring and will have this done very quickly. We apologise to all our clients as yes we know our normal great service level is not up to snuff. Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Hardwood flooring install

When walking into Downtown Flooring on Queen West, you will be greeted with a friendly staff who are very helpful in choosing a product. I was able to take samples home and the sales people negotiated on pricing with me. However, the problem did not occur until the installation a couple weeks later.
The install team came to my home, they were friendly and polite, I offered them the use of my basement bathroom while they work as a courtesy. They were almost done the install when I noticed my water pressure was low upstairs and I heard running water. One of the installers left the water running in my basement bathroom sink after they used it and walked away without turning it off. My house is 100 years old, so the sink doesn't drain very fast, this caused it to over flow and filled my basement hallway and bathroom with 2'' of water. I ran down when I heard the water and saw the mess, I assumed the tap broke or something. NOPE, it was just left on. The crew was shocked, I told them I would clean up the water. They left in quite the hurry. I was left with a flooded basement and to my surprise a brand new floor covered with piles of sawdust for me to clean. I also noticed a long scratch on my new kitchen floor from the crew dragging the fridge across the floor. The fridge was the only item that needed to move on this floor and it had wheels. I don't understand how this happened. In addition I have recently discovered that every single heat vent is cut crooked and will not fit any size of vent cover. There was also debris from the wood they cut left in the vents. When I called the sales representative from Downtown Flooring to tell them about the water damage and the scratch, they offered no apology or compensation. I don't like leaving a bad review with a business, but trying to tell them directly was a waste of time. I'm not okay with this and I am pretty annoyed by this experience even a year later. This company needs to stand behind the services they offer. Feel free to contact me: Downtown Flooring if you want to fix this problem. ricky@saucetel.com

Laminate wood flooring

We hired Downtown Flooring to remove the carpeting and install laminate wood flooring in our 2 upstairs bedrooms. These guys are amazing. We went down to their gallery on Queen St. and they sent us home with a deck of flooring samples so we could match the new floors to the existing laminate flooring we had downstairs.

Stefan came to our home and measured our floors and was very friendly. We were on the fence about whether to also replace the carpet on the landing, but Stefan gave us some very honest recommendations.

On the day of our appointment they sent 2 men to install the flooring. They showed up promptly at the time they were scheduled that morning, carried everything in and were very polite and friendly. They got to work immediately and were finished by lunch time.

They did an amazing job and everyone has commented how nice our new floors look. I would definitely recommend these guys.

New flooring and carpet

I was very happy to discover Downtown Flooring. Their in-store selection of wood flooring, vinyl laminates and carpet was excellent, and their service was first-rate. Once I decided to move ahead with my project, their installers were prompt, efficient, clean and quick. Their team was also very helpful addressing follow-up questions about care/maintenance.
