Move

Please do look at the reviews specific to the Ottawa crew if you are thinking about using that location-- sure wish I did.

The main recurring issue being that the company lures you in with a low quote, only to add 1 hour of travel time to the bill, of which you are only made aware of after the fact.

Another specific complaint that I have is that once the move was almost complete and we were busy unpacking things, we began to notice the movers sort of took more time between trips to rack up the clock a bit. I should have watched them more closely, but I trusted them as they seemed nice.

The last thing to move was my boxspring which would not fit in the elevator and had to be moved up 9 flights of stairs. At the end of the day, the crew was tired and did not want to do this. They told me that it would add at least another 30minutes to an already large bill. I ended up moving it up the stairs with my girlfriend in 5 minutes- but why am i paying movers over $1000 if I am forced to move some of my own furniture?

The movers were very friendly, not the most careful, they did move very fast at the beginning but then slowed down (i feel on purpose to drag out the move) towards the end.

Do not be lured in by their quote on the phone. That quote is not what you will end up paying.

Company Response

Our apologies for the delayed response but we discovered your move was booked under another name, your girlfriend's. During the booking process, the office staff was only dealing with Michael's girlfriend.
The travel time is explained to all of our customers by phone, email, and our email customer booking confirmations. After completing your booking, your girlfriend had no further questions. Thus leaving us to believe she understood everything, otherwise we would have gladly taken the time to explain any questions.
We do not provide quotes, only approximate estimates as the time it takes to complete each move varies depending on many different factors. To name a few, the number of items to be moved, access at each end, long walk to a front door, and elevators, especially if they are small. Your move did require extra walking and two elevators, one at pick up (18th floor) and a small elevator (9th floor) to unload your belongings. Our crew offered to carry the box spring up nine floors explaining that it would add time to the bill. However you declined. While most moving companies would charge per flight of stairs, we charge by the actual time it would take for the movers to move the item. Therefore resulting in a savings to our customers.

relocating

Regarding my move on July 6/14.
SEAN RUMBALL ***** A terrific, outstanding/stellar crew leader with co-movers Josh, Hunter & Phil. The men were hard working throughout the day. They were punctual, courteous, professional, friendly & knowledgeable as to what all was required. They took care to place runners to protect the floors. They asked me on different issues as to where and what. They kept in mind the time of day as to completing the job by dusk since I was paying for their time. Also according to the co. policy, they could not work past 9 pm. They were thoughtful and considerate. They were obliging, very strong, capable, & enduring, non stop workers on a very hot long day that started at 8 a.m. and finished at 9 p.m. One particular item, a long low very heavy cupboard could not fit into the elevator therefore, Sean and Josh had to carry it up to the third floor on the stairway. IT WAS A FORMIDABLE JOB!! I was greatly relieved that they did not fall backwards however they did it! I do think they may have had very sore arms and bodies the next day. I thank Josh and Sean for that extra effort!! The men worked in pairs for the most part, back and forth to the moving truck & house then Cambridge condo bldg. hundreds of times without any complaints. It was incredible how hard they persevered! I would say Sean is a terrific person, mindful to his workers' need for a break every so often, he is extremely conscientious. Sean would ask me if there was any other necessary moving that needed to be done once items were in the condo. Taking care and being concerned. While unloading the truck, working side by side his team, they kept a positive banter up in order to keep their spirits up.
Phil & Hunter were obliging to where every item had to go taking care. Sean & Josh worked at an incredible pace throughout the day getting items to the elevator from the trucks which were parked on the street some distance away. Phil & Hunter then removed the items and carefully carried each item to my condo. Again at a steady pace. All of my belongings arrived in top shape thanks to Sean's excellent packing of the trucks and subsequent delivery of every item to my 3rd floor condo. The four men were careful in the carrying and placing of every item. The men got on with the job throughout the heat emptying 2 1/2 trucks of my belongings.
Thank you to Eric for keeping me in paper and boxes! For answering my questions before the moving day. Thank you to Don as well.
Thank you ever so much Sean, Josh, Phil & Hunter for an excellent move.
Thank you to everyone at Two Small Men with Big Hearts Moving Co. I will gladly refer your company to family & friends. The only thing I would have changed is not to have so much STUFF!!!! Sincerely, Lynda H.

furniture moving

In my adult life I have moved seventeen times. I consider myself pretty much an expert in this field.
Without a doubt Two Small Men With Big Hearts has been my most positive experience.
I encountered professional, friendly service from the moment I phoned to book the move until they pulled out of my drive at the end of the move.
The movers themselves were dressed like professionals, and acted like professionals. They were friendly, efficient and careful.
They simply worked steadily and wasted no time.
It was a positive experience ... and that in itself says a lot for a moving day!

Moving

Read some of the reviews and some where positive and some where negative - well we can't please everyone can we? For me it was a pleasant move thankfully - the boys were great - I helped them move lots of stuff too -even to a door of the hinges just so I can get my computer desk out - it is my stuff at the end of the day - and will do anything to help with the move and make things easier...and why not! I would recommend this company in a heart beat - although a did loose a part of my filing cabinet - but guess what - things like this will happen and should expect little things like this- otherwise again - I will recommend this company to anyone seeking great movers no matter what - cheers!

Best experience with any moving company period. Crew was extremely courteous, hard working and fast. We moved quite a bit of stuff in a relatively timely manner - everything went off without a hitch! Great job to the Hamilton office for hiring Tanner and Adrian! Will recommend them to friends and family!

Two small men with no hearts at all

I booked these guys for a small move, a bachelor to a bachelor. They told me over the phone there was a three hour minimum, which is pretty standard, and I had to pay a deposit, which I was happy to do.
On the moving, the movers were late. Never the less, I had brought up ALL my boxes from the basement to the driveway in preparation for movers arrival. I even brought up some furniture I could carry, and all the movers had to do was load it all on the truck, which I helped them do. I even helped carry up the couch from the basement as well as other large items.
I helped to offload the truck at the other end, all in all from beginning to end it all took 2.5 hours! Well within my minimum of three hours.
They charged me for four hours... One hour travel time they call it. I was explained that hour of travel time was included in the 3 hours! I was prepared and worked as hard as I did on my own to assure we did not go over the three hours. I even called the week before my move to find out how much money would be left owing. The lady on the phone quoted me $291 something, so I had $300 cash prepared for them.
After the job all of a sudden they wanted more money. The movers called their boss to explained and the boss was aggressive and verbally abusive! He harassed me for money and threatened to take me to court!
Even if it had been properly explained to me (and it wasn't), and even if I had misunderstood (and I didnt), I see no reason to swear and threaten a customer. There was zero accountability on their part, zero manners, zero respect, not ONE apology for the "misunderstanding".. No curtesy. Right from the beginning the manager was rude, abusive, impatient, aggressive, spoke over me, bullied me and was completely unwilling to even listen to me.
I am very disappointed with this company. I wish I had never hired them.

Hello Genevieve,
Your job did take 2.5 hours, as you understand, however. You also have to pay our company for the travel time to get from our office to your pick up location and from your drop off back to our office. Travel time is an average of 1 hour for all of our local moves. Therefore, your total move consisted of 2.5 hours labour plus 1 hour travel for a total of 3.5 hours which was billed to you. Out of good faith we will adjust your bill to 3 hours. Thank you for choosing Two Small Men and have a good day.
Thank you

Moving

For the past 5 years I've been telling ANYONE who will listen about our HORRIBLE experience with the Hamilton franchise owner Mike Stacey. Here's the email I sent to the company. My response to this letter was "I wyll forward to Toronto. Thanks for the letter. Glen B."
And that was it. Here's my complaint letter that received no resolution -
My name is Kate and I have used your company twice in the past 19 months.
Once for a long distance move from Halifax to Hamilton at a cost of over $3000 (Dec.27/07 - Jan. 7/08)
and again within Hamilton at a cost of over $1200 (June 29/09).
The move from Halifax was WONDERFUL and your team there was FANTASTIC!
Which was the reason I used them again for our second move.
Unfortunately, our second move was less than satisfactory.
Firstly, the movers showed up 3 hours earlier than we had scheduled them for. (9am vs.12 noon)
However, upon checking our confirmation, we did see that yes, they had us down for 9 am.
Ok, our bad. Devil's in the details!!
So, we lost an hour of moving time ($135) because we were at our new home preparing for the mover's arrival.
Then, unfortunately 2 of the movers had to leave the site during the move. One wrenched his back and the other got a call from his family that his father had just had a heart attack. Very unfortunate all around. However, there was an hour of time when replacements were being sought and nothing was happening but we were STILL charged for this time. I feel that yes, it was unfortunate, but we should not be held responsible for paying for that time.
Then, upon arrival, the movers were backing onto our property and backed their truck into our wrought iron railing and broke it.
I wasn't informed of this until I spoke to my neighbour the next day when I noticed the broken railing and she said she saw it happen. She was on her front porch minding our children (so that they wouldn't be in the mover's way) and was aghast that the movers did NOT inform us of this at the time. If you like, I can get her account of what happened to you when she gets back from doing missionary work in India in 2 weeks.
My husband contacted Mike Stacey, the owner of the franchise here in Hamilton, and he was nothing but argumentative toward him. He said he would mail us a cheque for $25.00 to cover the cost the railing. Now, if it were the year 1947, maybe $25 would cover it, but it's not. After doing some research, it appears that the MINIMUM cost for a railing is $60 per square foot. Our railing is 6 feet long. That's a total of $360, before taxes, not to mention the hour of 'lag time' we have already paid for, it appears we're out about $500.

Aside from waging a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and taking Mr. Stacey to small claims court, which I would prefer not to do, but I will if need be, is there anything you can do to help me?
If this kind of thing happened to you or a family member, would you be satisfied with these results? I hope not.

I hope we can find a satisfactory solution and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you for your time.

And 5 years, a complaint letter to the BBB later, still NOTHING.

Good morning Katie,

We are very sorry you had a bad move with the Hamilton office.

This move was done in 2009 so it was 5 years ago. Since that time the management and owners have changed and the new owners have had to do some damage control. They have reorganized the office and have done a terrific job of providing customer service to their customers. Please note that Mike Stacey is no longer with Two Small Men With Big Hearts Moving Co. If you would like to give the Hamilton office a call, the new owner has indicated that he would be more than happy to speak to you and try and resolve this issue.

We do hope that you would reconsider if and when it comes time to move again, and give us another try.

Moving from Strathroy to London

Our 3 guys, Oscar, Hunter & Christian arrived on time & introduced themselves to us. After looking at what was being moved, they started to work. They wrapped & packed the truck & we arrived at our new address at the exact time that was planned. They then unloaded, unwrapped all the furniture & proceeded to put everything together, (beds, dressers, etc. & also put all the boxes in the areas that were shown on the boxes). They finished on time. All 3 guys were so polite, clean & neatly dressed. We would not hesitate to use this moving company again.

Moving Day

Nothing prepares you for the stress of moving day…but Dave's team (Anthony, Raman & Boss) more than exceeded our expectations, they felt like family moving us into our new home. They were actually 20 minutes earlier than scheduled, with positive attitudes and were extremely hard working. Not once in the entire 9 hour process did they even complain once! I was blown away at their courtesy and professionalism. They were careful not to break/damage anything and worked quickly all day-- always smiling and laughing! Tip these movers well, they more than deserve it! I was shocked and impressed that Dave showed up himself to assess if another truck would be needed rather than having to make an additional trip. And he stayed on as a helping hand until that truck was entirely packed up. These are not bogus movers that quote low prices then hold your belongings hostage until you pay double the quote price, nor are they high end movers that charge an arm and leg based on each item you own…this is an affordable, hard working and professional moving team that treats its customers like family, only better!!! I've already recommended Dave's team to 3 people with upcoming moves. Thanks again for moving us into our home!
