New sofit and eaves trough

I'll start by saying that the 5 out of 10 rating is mostly for the installers (Cal & Trevor) who did the work on our house - they are probably the only reason this review wasn't scored at a 1 out of 10. They did a great job and really showed they cared in how they did the install they day they showed up. We are happy with the way it turned out.

The salesman Frank did a impressive job helping us choose the colors and installation methods (i.e.: location of downspouts etc.) but unfortunately, once we signed the contract he really had nothing else to do with us. After 2 months I inquired if he had a time when the work would be done on our house and he said he'd get the scheduling people to call me - they never did. But having faith that we picked the right contractor, we continued to be patient and after I inquired again, I was told I hear back from them the next week and 5 weeks later there we still heard nothing. Then one day almost 2 months later, I get a phone call from another person saying the crew would be there the next day - at this point, we were worried, based on what we'd seen so far, that if we couldn't be there it could be several more weeks/months before a crew could come out.

That all being said, my biggest issue with D'Angelo & Sons was the lack of communication during the 4 months we waited for the installation of the new eaves trough, soffit and downspouts on our house. Reading through previous reviews, I could see this has been an issue and it appears to still be one today. The info kit we got was very impressive but that all gets tarnished when you leave your customers in the dark - even if things are delayed you should be letting me know - I'll be ok with it and probably would appreciate the update - why make me wonder then call and then get no answer?

I can't say for sure that I would be 100% confident in recommending this company to someone else based on the lack of their communication, which to me, is just as important as the job the crew does when they show up.

Company Response

Hi Richard, we want to apologize for the lack of communication you experienced while working with our company. We are currently working to change our system so that clients will be much more informed when it comes to the work we are doing for them. At D'Angelo and Sons, we are not unaware that sometimes this can be an issue when there is bad weather, cancellations or hold ups with our crew. However, we want to ensure that we fix the problems to guarantee the best customer service. Thankfully our crew was able to show you the professional approach we take when it comes to our product and service installation, however, we will definitely address the communication problems that you listed. Thank you for taking the time to leave this review Richard, we always want to be aware of what we can fix as a company.

Replacement of roof

From the time that I picked up the phone to get a quote, to the time that their truck pulled out of my driveway, after the job was completed, my first impression never changed. The D'Angelo team are "top drawer": Cassandra, excellent phone manner; Mike, professional presentation & salesperson with integrity; Tony (crew leader), Carlos (Ops Manager) and Andrew (an owner) - each one efficient, kind, attentive and above all, customer-focused. Although there was one small glitch with the job, it was dealt with immediately. Hard to be 100% satisfied in today's world, but I am.

New roof to be installed - 5 weeks later and still waiting

Upon estimate, salesperson mis quoted then came back to ask for an additional 5% of the contracted price. Not impressed...
Also at signing we were told installation will be in a week.
Zero communication from the salesperson or the company.

Only after several telephone conversations with their office did we finally get some movement. A dumpster arrived today and the driver thought it best to park it lengthwise across our double car garage.

I can only imagine the attitude of the supervisor and crew if this is how their administrative and logistics people handle our account.

Im sure their contact labourers can install a roof. You are better off looking for an independent contractor for your roofing solutions.

I thought we had found a reputable roofing contractor but so far have been utterly unimpressed.

New Roof

We are very happy with our new roof! Carlos was so kind to meet with us several times to set everything up, always accommodating our busy schedules and promptly returning messages. Scott and his crew did a great job, and I was very appreciative of the care they took to ensure there was a clean pathway for our kids to safely get inside off the bus after school. Even with our larger roof they sent a crew big enough to get the job done in just one day. We will be highly recommending D'Angelo and Sons!

Removal of 2 Interior walls

My name is Rocco. I had 2 dividing walls that needed to be removed. Jeremie from D'Angelo and Sons provided us options and the description of the work involved. He was honest and most helpful. The team that removed the 2 walls worked hard and carefully as if it was their own home. D'Angelo and Sons were true to the contract and I did not have to pay a dollar more from what we agreed upon. I wanted to express my thanks and appreciation to the entire team.

Roof Replacement

I would highly recommend D'Angelo Roofing. They just completed our roof ahead of our schedule and on budget. The company is highly professional from the quoting process through to installation and clean up. I researched several companies before proceeding with D'Angelo, receiving 5 quotes in total. Will, the sales manager, was very helpful in selecting the correct materials and colour for our home. The crew were on time daily, and worked diligently in intense summer heat to ensure the job was done correctly and with as little disruption to our household as possible. Thank you Will and the D'Angelo Team, I will be recommending your services in the future.

Hi Louise, thank you so much for leaving us this amazing review. It's great to hear that from start to finish your job went smoothly and met your expectations. The hot summer was definitely an obstacle this year, however, D'Angelo and Sons is glad that we could still provide you with a professionally installed and high quality roof. We're grateful to have customers such as yourself, if you would like to recommend us to any friends or family members, we'd love to add you to our reward program. Full Roof, Soffit and Eavestrough replacement plus attic insulation

First, I've never used social media or review websites before, because I believe that reasonable people can always solve problems without resorting to posting negative comments online. It's a tough economy, and I don't like to think that I could impact someones ability to make a living. This is all being posted now after over a year trying to get issues fixed by D'Angelos. Why they don't do simple fix-ups on things that are so clearly wrong is anyones guess. I gave them a full Roof, Soffit and Eavestrough replacement job plus attic insulation improvement to R50. I paid them over $16,000. I made the mistake of paying them with their promises that they would fix up all of the problems.

You can judge for yourself by the pictures and description whether they are worth doing business with. And when you sit with their salesmen, ask them how they can leave jobs in this condition and not fix them?

You can read the BBB Case# 1341808 thats been filed against them. I had hoped they would admit their mistakes, compensate me, and I wouldn't have to post on Review Sites like this. I've worked on construction projects my whole life...things go wrong all the time, but they get fixed and everyone moves on. My experience has been that D'Angelo's wont fix problems after you've paid them. If you ask their salesmen about my problems, they will talk to you more than they talk to me. The most obvious question you could ask is, looking at the picture of the roof vents that aren't installed over the holes that they cut...why wouldn't that be fixed? Stuff happens...no big deal...but how could they not fix those badly installed vents? What could they argue for not fixing them? There is no excuse. I've had the same problems as other Reviewers on this site...they just don't fix problems that they cause. Anyone can have a bad day at work and make mistakes, but not fixing them makes no sense. There isn't any excuse.

I've had to hire a House Inspector to get all of the deficiencies documented because D'Angelos wouldn't fix anything. I've had to pay a Paralegal for advice, and will have to pay more again if I have to go to Small Claims Court.

You can read the BBB complaint 1341808 for another breakdown of what happened, but here is a summary:

Pictures:
- 2 pics of two roof vents that they installed that, weren't installed over the holes they cut. It's funny to look at...
- 2 pics of moldy roof boards that they didn't change out when they did the roof. There were over a dozen boards that needed to be changed, the salesmen even charged me extra because of the extra time and cost involved. They didn't change a single board.
- 1 pic of one of the many areas of my attic that were supposed to have R50 insulation installed where there was less than 3 inches. They came back and blew a bit more insulation, and the area pictured still has less than 6".
- 2 pics of Microwave vent that they didn't re-connect after they did my roof. They left it hanging...didn't say a word
- 1 pic of the soffit installed at the joint of my backsplit house. It hangs off and bounces in the wind still today. They came back 3 times and said they fixed it.

Summary:
Insulation:
I had a previous leak, and the salesman told me they would go in and remove the old wetted insulation...they didn't remove any of it. There was insulation in some spots which was piled to the roof boards and was blocking air circulation causing ventilation problems. They didn't rearrange it as I was told they would, the spots still have insulation piled up and touching the roof boards. . Insulation was supposed to be R50, there are large areas (about 20% of area) where there is less than 4". They dumped about 2 feet of insulation in the middle of the attic. Home Inspector told me that some variation in thickness for R50 can be accepted, but less than 6" isn't reasonable.

Roof Vents:
I had 5 existing roof vents, and was told I needed 11. They never installed any new vents on the original job, they left me with 5. I was told by salesman that poor ventilation was part of my leaking and ice damming problems, and contributed to mold issue. They came back after 4 months and installed 4 more vents, and 2 of them are shown in the pics attached, not over the holes they cut. Home Inspector told me that they didn't use the Weather Watch underlay under the new roof vents...they did on the originally installed roof vents, and I was told by the salesman that all roof vents would have Weather Watch because of the low slope roof and the fact that I'd had leaks previously. They still haven't fixed the 2 badly installed roof vents, they told me twice that they have been here while I was at work and repaired them, which wasn't true.

Eavestroughs:
House is a back-split, and eavestroughs on the north side of the house haven't flowed from the day they were installed...they overflow when it rains. They sit full with 2" of water after it rains. I've been told by D'Angelos that they have been fixed 6 times. A House Inspector told me that they slope away from the drain spout (he put a laser lever in them and had the problem identified in less than 1 minute)...it's a simple issue of raising the troughs 1" at the back of the house, and lowering them 1" at the drain spout at the middle of the house so that the water flows toward the drain spout. Simple fix. Why D'Angelos wont do that is anyones guess. They offered me a Rain Barrel at one point, and I refused...the old eavestroughs were ugly, but they worked fine...I told them I wouldn't accept a Rain Barrel when the eavestroughs could be installed to work right with a few small adjustments. They wont tell me what they did to fix them the 6 times that they said they did it.

Soffits:
The soffits in some places (at the 2 points where the back-split levels come together) flap in the wind. The bedroom next to one of them cant be used because there is so much noise. 2 Contractors have told me that they can't be properly attached and anchored without taking the roof boards above them off to get access. D'Angelos installed these soffits months after the roof was done, and they can't get into the tight wedge of the back-split to secure them. They have tried to fix them multiple times, and they just keep falling off. Other soffits on the front porch regularly pop screws out of them, I have found 4 of them on the porch in a little over a year, and the soffits hang badly where the screws fell out. I am waiting for the BBB Case to be answered and resolved (or Small Claims Court...) before I get these deficiencies repaired.

Moldy Boards not Replaced:
I knew of this issue when I bought the house. There were over a dozen moldy boards on the roof, and the stink off of them in the summer was bad enough to come into the house. I still have the original House Inspectors Report from before I bought the house saying that I had to replace these boards. The Salesman from D'Angelos identified all of the boards too, he said they had to be changed, and there was even an extra cost to do that, because there were so many bad ones. He said if it was a few boards there would be no charge, but with dozens...I had to pay for the extra work. A few weeks after the installation the mold smell in my house
on a hot day was back...I stuck my head in the attic and saw that they didn't change a single moldy board...not one of them was changed. There is no roofer who would not change moldy boards like that...you can see from the pictures that the boards are so moldy they stand out like a neon sign, and their Salesman identified them on the Quote...but not one of them was changed. You will get a better answer from D'Angelos about why it happened or what they are going to do about it than I get. I definitely would have a hard time selling the house with all of the moldy boards still there...and after I paid D'Angelos extra to have them all changed.

Flashing:
The Flashing on the chimney was supposed to be changed out and resealed. It was written on my Quote by the salesman. It wasn't done on the original installation, and it took me over 6 months of asking week-after-week for it to finally get done.

As unbelievable as that sounds...it sounds like a whining, complaining old man...you should read the other reviews on this site and see that I'm not the only one this company messes over. They do it a lot. There may be lots of satisfied customers, but there are a lot of people who D'Angelos really messes over too.

When you sit with a D'Angelos salesman for your job, show him the pictures of my roof vents not over the holes, and the moldy boards, and ask him how they could leave a customer like that?

As I said, I've worked construction my whole life. Stuff goes wrong all the time. D'Angelos problem isn't that mistakes happen, its that they refuse to fix anything after they have been paid. If you use them I'd recommend you get up in your attic and on your roof before you pay them to find any possible problems, because after you pay, my experience is that they will not do anything to help you out, and if they do it will only be after you call them several time s a week and accept several missed appointments after you have waited at home for them..

I will post the results of my BBB Complaint if D'Angelos answer it, and if I have to go to Small Claims Court I will post the results of that too. I feel bad for any hardworking honest people in this company...because they really screw over a lot of people for a lot of money.
