Ipe Hardwood for my home

I purchased approximately 700 square feet of Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) hardwood from this company. The brand was St Lawrence Collections (which I later found out is affiliated with Brampton Flooring). The reason to purchase this specific wood is that I recently purchased a house and it has this exact hardwood throughout most of the house. I purchased enough to finish the 3 bedrooms that had not yet been done. This company is the exclusive supplier for this product (again I later found out it's because they are affiliated).

My contractor, who I am super happy with, picked up the wood for us and brought it to our house. After waiting the few days for the wood to acclimate to the house conditions he started to install it, but after making the discovery that the finish was not properly adhered to the wood he stopped after only laying a few rows in one room and immediately reported this issue to me. We did a test with a coin on the end of one of the boards and the clear coat finish (which didn't match the previous wood of the exact same type and finish) was literally flaking right off of the wood. Just to make sure we randomly tested a few other boards from different boxes of the wood and they all showed the same issues.

My contractor took a sample back to Brampton Hardwood as this was what was required when we looked on the St Lawerence Collections website for warranty issues -- they instruct the user to contact the supplier and have it escalated through them. After a week of hmming and hawing the sales person I deal with at Brampton Hardwood told me that they were actually affiliated with Brampton Hardwood -- that Brampton Hardwood actually bought this hardwood unfinished and then sent it to St Lawrence to have the finish applied and branded with their brand) and that the rep from St Lawrence would be in contact with me directly. Several more days have now gone by and even though I repeatedly call Brampton Hardwood I've not been able to get any resolution on this issue. I have approx 1000 lbs of hardwood sitting in the middle of a bedroom floor, it's too heavy for me to even move it, the store doesn't want to offer support, the manufacturer is outright avoiding the issue even though they claim a 35 year "wear" warranty (right now it wouldn't last 35 minutes let alone years) -- and I have professional movers with 3 truckloads of furniture showing up in the morning and nowhere to put it all.

I highly advise avoiding this company if you want any kind of after-sales follow up or support. I've had to spend almost 2 full weeks chasing them on this issue and there's no apparent resolution in sight.

Flooring

I just want to comment on Vandana's customer service and her swift fox like sales skills. I called the store to ask about their annual liquidation sale because I needed additional 600sq feet of floor that I have purchased from them few years back. Vandana replied that they no longer have these sales but the floor that I am looking for is on sale now for $4.99 and that I should get it right away because they only have 600sq ft left. I asked her if she can give me a better deal and she said she will give it to me for $4.89. Meanwhile I called other stores to check the pricing and it turned out Brampton Flooring gave me the best deal. The same week I send my husband to pick up the floor, prior to that I called her to confirm if they still had it, she said yes and that he can pick it up. After my husband came back and unloaded the floor upstairs to the bedroom I looked at the invoice that he placed in the kitchen and my legs became numb because she charged him $5.49 instead $4.89. That's over $400 on this purchase. I quickly called her and she was fast to reply that she never promised me that price and that I can return it and she hanged up. I blame my self because I was so naïve and forgot to remind my husband about the deal she offered me. He called me few times from the store to check but I couldn't pick up as I was in an important meeting. Vandana convinced him that she is giving him the best deal. I called the manger but he never replied. This business does not have any accountability for what they say or what they promise. I give them a big fat 0 for ethics. The $400 wont make me any richer or poorer but I just hate what people do to get a sale. If the floor wasn't unloaded I would take it back but they would charge me 15% restocking fee. Reading the other bad reviews I just don't know how these people sleep at night.

Company Response

Hi Agnes. There appears to be a considerable level of misunderstanding between you, your husband and our sales staff. You had originally purchased some of this flooring some years ago at one of our tent sales. At that time your price was lower as this was a stocked item with plenty of inventory that we were moving in volume at extremely deeply discounted costs. Like any sales event, once over the prices revert upwards again. Also, while this particular product has been discontinued for a while we luckily had enough left over in stock to service you. However, with inflation, greatly increased raw material costs within the hardwood industry and the diminished US exchange rate, costs of all hardwood flooring have increased considerably from a few years ago. Thus, as was clearly relayed to you by Vandana, the current price for this product was $5.99, but we would reduce it to $5.89 as you were a repeat customer. At no time were the prices of $4.99 or $4.89 even mentioned. As per our usual practice when a customer requests that product be held until pick up, Vandana had requested a deposit from you so an invoice could be prepared and sent to you. Notwithstanding your refusal to do this, as a good faith customer service gesture we still put the wood aside until your husband was able to come to our store. In fact, once arriving at the showroom your husband worked out a further discount with Vandana and you ended up getting the hardwood for only $5.49, a sizable $0.50 P.S.F. savings. Your husband was very pleased with the price and that that he got the last of the product to match the other hardwood in your home, and happily paid and picked it up. We therefore respectfully disagree with your labeling Vandana with "fox like sales skills." She was honest and open with you and your husband throughout all dealings. We also are extremely disappointed with your statements that we lack ethics and accountability. Brampton Hardwood Floors has over the past 30-years become the largest hardwood flooring retailer in Ontario by providing great prices, quality and customer service. About one hundred happy, satisfied customers purchase from us every day, which is well over 30,000 clients a year. It is too bad that you have misinterpreted the situation here and decided to post this negative review. However, please rest assured that we still consider you a valued customer and would gladly work with you to make this a positive experience. Just give us a call.

Hand scrapped Hardwood

I was looking for the scrapped hardwood. My intention was to just look around and get an idea how much it would cost me. I heard from friend about Brampton Hardwood company and his positive experience with the company. So I went there and I was really happy with the courteous and professional service I end up buying the wood worth more than $ 6K from Sales person Vandana. She answered my questions and provided me with the guidance regarding my project.

I really recommend this company to others. Just go there and experience the positive experience.

Thank you.

I had a great experience shopping with Brampton Hardwood. They have lots to choose from and the prices are great. The sales rep, Vandana Gupta, was very knowledgeable about the products. She took her time walking me through the different products and gave me great advice. I was able to pick up the wood on the same day. Very smooth process. Kitchen and Home Office Reno

We'd been shopping around for flooring in the past and I returned to Brampton Hardwood not only because of the selection and pricing, but also because of the service. I remembered Lina from our first visit to the Gordon Mackay location. (We'd also visited the Brampton location.)

Lina was INCREDIBLY helpful and quite a character - a pleasure to deal with! I purchased 2 different types of flooring from her.

One of my choices was a special order and unfortunately, I wasn't able to wait for it. She found me a gorgeous substitute and even helped arrange the installation with a VERY tight turnaround!

I was told my second choice of flooring was out of stock at another location. However, Lina went to work to find me what I needed! She called around and managed to find me just enough of the "out of stock" flooring to complete my project. She also gave me a fantastic deal!

As I told Lina when I left the store: thanks to her help, she and Brampton Flooring now have a customer for life. I've already begun to recommend the Gordon Mackay location to friends!

Lina at the Gordon MacKay location is as honest and no nonsense as you can hope for. She even kept the cheaper price she quoted to me after it went up - and before I signed the purchase agreement. You couldn't ask for more!

Hardwood flooring

Very upset with salesperson, Vandana and manager, Joe. Bought a very expensive hardwood. Was told it was in stock. Bought one box to take home and had other 33 boxes delivered at a charge. When we received our order it was the incorrect batch. When we called to tell them the problem they told us that was what we ordered and, by the way, they did not have enough of the original mill run, only 29 boxes. We agreed to switch out the 29 boxes of the original batch we wanted and kept 4 boxes of the different mill run they sent us. The kicker is that we had to pay for the delivery AGAIN to have the correct merchandise delivered. Spoke to Joe, apparently the manager, told him the entire story, was told that it was our fault that we picked up one box first and had the rest delivered the next day. He would not credit us the second delivery charge. Am very upset that a company such as Brampton has zero customer service. Buyer beware, they are great when you are buying but once you have bought you are on your own even if it is their fault.
We were forced to pay a second delivery charge because they sent the wrong product the first time.

Company Response

Hi Rosemary,

As was explained to you, the reason that the second delivery was required was simply confusion due to the natural lightening processes inherent in certain wood species. The sucupira hardwood you bought is a beautiful Brazilian hardwood product. The nature of sucupira wood will cause it to "amber" or grow lighter in colour with the passage of time. To avoid confusion with customers, we have two representative samples of sucupira wood in our showroom, an older lighter sample showing the wood after it has "ambered" and a newer sample which is still slightly darker. Once you received your product you were concerned that the hue was not matching your needs and we therefore agreed to provide replacement sucupira hardwood from an older batch so you would not need to wait for the natural "ambering" process to run its course. There were no issues with quality or mistakes on our part, the wood was correct and the change in batches was at your request. Thus, as the change was not our fault the cost of delivery of the replacement batch was not our responsibility. Your husband acknowledged this when he came to pay for delivery at our showroom. Notwithstanding, in the interest of good faith customer relations our manager Joe had offered to split the cost of shipping the replacement batch. We felt that it was a reasonable way to try and resolve your concern, but you did not accept. Please feel free to contact us should you wish to discuss. We have been in business nearly 30 years and service about 30,000 customers a year from our various locations, and pride ourselves on our excellent customer service.
