I have been in my present home for over 20 years. We have a main floor and basement fireplace with a dual flu to the roof. In the past I've used two other companies year to year and my choice of who was employed was based on who called me first. There was no specific loyalty beyond the fact that they were completing a job for me and it seemed satisfactory. Each year they would clean the hearth, inspect the chimney from below and above visually and apparently with a camera, inspect the caps on the chimney flues, scrape and/or brush the flues and cleanup thereafter. I was satisfied enough with their service because I was always given a "clean bill of health". I was invited by them to inform my insurance company that the chimneys had been inspected and had passed, and was given an invoice which served as a certificate to certify that the chimneys were up to grade and safe.
In 2010, Magic Touch Chimney Sweeps contacted me and as per my practice to that point, I thought I would give another company who called me first, an opportunity. As with the others, Magic Touch was professional and performed all the inspections, cleaning and other services I required. What was different is that I was invited by the service man, Michael, to be present while he visually, and with a camera or other similar type of inspection device, inspected the flues. He found that my basement fireplace was actually unsafe. It had been constructed 20 years ago with a short, unattached flu liner that was only 10 feet in length while the distance from the basement to the top of the house is well over 30 feet. He informed me that this was NOT safe and he could not certify the basement chimney. He gave me positive suggestions as to how I could safely remedy the situation, and these have been taken, thankfully.
I cannot explain how upset I was to hear that I had been misled for most of the 20 years with the other two companies, and even more, that as a result of their misinformation, I was left trusting in their opinion but also left dangerously exposed for my family, myself and our home since an improper installation years ago was not recognized by them and could have easily led to a house fire, which furthermorre would not have been covered by insurance. As calmly as I can say this, furious does not adequately describe my state regarding these former companies. Fortunately there are still companies in the market that work professionally and with integrity. Thank you Magic Touch.
As you can see it was Magic Touch Chimney Sweeps who properly identified the problem and advised me accordingly. Since then I have used this company twice more with a service man named Chris, who gives me equally efficient and excellent service. I also find the reception staff and owner at the Markham office (905 764 1275) to be extremely pleasant, helpful and professional. I highly recommend this company.
