Furnace Cleaning and Servicing

I was able to get an appointment within a week. The technician was quite friendly, but once he saw my older furnace (probably from 1963) he said that it's not efficient. The burner tubes were rusting and the entire furnace should be replaced. He said he couldn't clean much except for vacuuming the burner tubes in my furnace. The technician said he'll replace the fan belt because it was cracked (which it was), but when he wanted to charge me an extra $40 for the belt, I told him to put the old one back. I later bought a belt at Canadian Tire for less than $10 and replaced it myself. Furthermore, I later hired another company to vacuum my air ducts and he took a look at my furnace for free and said that the furnace is older, but it's in good condition and it'll still heat your home warmer than some of the newer high efficiency furnaces out there. Also, he said that the burner tubes were cast iron, and so it's normal for it to rust based on the furnace's age. he said, "even though the burners were rusting, it'll still last for a very long time, so don't be too concerned about it." In the end, I would not use Best Heating again nor recommend them.

Furnace Service

I bought a Livingsocial coupon with 50% discount on Furnace Maintenance. The technician showed up while I was at work and my Mother and Brother showed him in. He did not maintain anything (I was promised that he would maintain the Furnace, Hot Water Tank and the Fireplace). Instead, he broke the furnace closet door which I now have to pay to fix, scared my Mother and Brother into thinking that the furnace was leaking gas and very unsafe. He then called me and said that he cannot touch the furnace because it is unsafe and that I must replace it as soon as possible.

He left his diagnosis sheet which included the conclusion that my furnace is (over-firing and leaking gas) with his phone number to call to discuss new furnace offers.

I contacted FortisBC and got the contact information of a licensed technician who came home and checked my furnace. He said that there is nothing wrong with the furnace and it was very safe. He performed maintenance and said that I should bring someone to perform regular maintenance on it in 12-18 months but otherwise I don’t need to replace it yet. He also left his diagnosis sheet.

I called Best Heating and asked to speak with a manager, I was promised that one will call me back but they didn't. I called again the week after and a lady answered me, she was nice and apologetic and sent me a refund check for the service that was never rendered.

Furnace Service

Used an online coupon to get an annual service. Tech came and quickly saw we had an old furnace and went back and got out the carbon monoxide meter. It gave a reading of 3 and then 4 at a vent - he said that under law he must 'red tag' the furnace but wouldn't and then offered a replacement pricing. He said cleaning was a waste and took certificate and left a replacement quote. I did get second and third opinion that were quite different. I was very disappointed in tact taken by the technician as we are considering a new furnace but will not buy from them!

Furnace service

I had Best heating come to service my older model furnace through a deal I bought on Living Social. The service person although very friendly quickly turned my furnace service into a sales call. He had me sign off on some 'safety concerns' with my old furnace. This put me in a position where I had to replace my furnace to satisfy my home insurance.

Based on that sales pitch I did install a new furnace, with another company. FYI the other company told me after looking at my old furnace that it was safe and could likely be adjusted to correct for the 'safety concern' stated by the Best service person.

Fireplace repair

We were contacted by an unsolicited phone call and because we had some fireplace problems decided to have our fireplace serviced. It turns out that we needed a significant overhaul and arrangements were made quickly and efficiently. The service repairman was professional and the job was done as per the quote for the additional work. We have since had some of the front pieces come loose (very recently) so need to contact the company to come fix it. (the repair was done within the last six months.

Furnace Check Up

When we bought our house the first winter we decided we should have the furnace cleaned for the season. There was a coupon in the local paper which we called and claimed. The guy showed up with what I can only say "an attitude". He went down and took all of 5 min. with his CO meter. Told us the furnace was not cleanable, had to be replaced, leaking CO etc. We tried to show him our inspection from when we bought the house but he refused to look at it. My husband pointed out that he seemed to be pushing a button to get a reading rather than letting the machine check the CO output. We argued with him for several minutes. He seemed to want to push us into buying a new furnace with an estimate somewhere in the 7,000 range. Finally after about 30 minutes of this harassment I gave him the coupon which was to give us a cleaning and checkup for $99 and we said well you didn't clean anything - so could we get just the estimate charge. He said no, it wasn't his fault that he couldn't clean the furnace. We ended up paying 112.00 for essentially no work. Next day I called the company and complained and basically was told that the technician was correct and we should really get this furnace they were selling. I hung up and called BC Gas who do checks our furnaces. They came, no leaks and did a quick clean, for free. They did say that the furnace should eventually be replaced but was not necessary yet. I would never deal with Best Heating again.

Bought new high efficiency furnace

My furnace was from 1973 and needed about $500 in work so I decided to put a new high efficiency furnace in instead. The thought is that I would save money on my heating bills. The company themselves did a great job, but I am not satisfied with the high efficiency furnace. If you are looking at installing a high efficiency furnace, make sure you do your research. The warmth from from the furnace is not near the same as my old furnace was.
