Water leaking under furnace

Called told McKinnon water leaking under furnace. Technician arrived next day. Took front cover off unscrewed plate on front of furnace.
Looked in with a light didn't see him do much more although he was here for an hour. Told me I needed a new heat exchanger. Next morning a person who sais he was the owner of McKinnon called and told me that I needed a new heat exchanger. He then suggested I call the company that had installed the furnace.
I did this . The technicians arrived and took the furnace pretty much apart and did a number of diagnostic tests and other checks .They found the leak and corrected it . They stated that the heat exchanger had tested out in perfect condition.
The next morning I called McKinnon the owner was not in I left my name and number and asked him to call me back. I expected him to do this so we could resolve the charge for a service call that
gave incorrect results. 2 days later no call .

Hello Mr. Pinnell.
Thank you for your comments. I was very clear with you during our phone call of last week that it is best that you contact an authorized Carrier dealer to deal with your furnace issue as it would be covered under the heat exchanger warranty. I was trying to assist you and serve your best interests, not ours. I am glad that your problem has been resolved by another contractor.

Furnace - AC Maintenance

I'll start by saying they have excellent technicians...but we have had two awful customer service experiences in a row with the company that overshadow the good work the technicians do. First, we booked an AC service appt in the summer and they never showed up for it. We got a call later to reschedule the appt with the excuse being that they were too busy to get to our house as scheduled. To be fair, they did show up for the rescheduled appt and we were happy with the service they provided. With that in mind, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and booked another appt when we wanted to do our Furnace maintenance. We juggled our schedule to accommodate the large 9am-1pm service window...and amazingly, they didn't show up again. This time we got a call just after the service window closed saying the technician would be another 30 minutes. The excuse, they were busy and traffic was bad. Brutal. I am very surprised by the lack of concern over their paying customers' time and I think that some sort of review of how they schedule appts is in order. Whatever they are doing now certainly doesn't seem to be working. Other companies seem to be able to meet their time commitments, so why can't Mckinnon?

Company Response

Hi Mr. Nevins,
As per our phone call I just made to you, I am sorry you are disappointed with our service appointment windows. In your specific situation, we arrived yesterday at 2 pm and the "window" was 9 am-1 pm. Our office did contact you to explain that our technicians were running behind schedule. Due to the nature of our business, it is difficult to assess how long a service call will take. We try to be thorough and this often puts us behind schedule. Sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused you.

Ductless Air Conditioning

We were referred to McKinnon Heating and Cooling by some happy customers and we've been using them for over 7 years for all our gas boiler needs.. All their technicians are certified and professional. They know what they are doing, they are fast, reliable and reasonably priced. They do quality work. They recently installed an excellent ductless air conditioning system for half the price compared to what most companies in Toronto were quoting. They did an excellent job with the install. They were patient, didn't rush the work and even worked in the rain! We would recommend this company to anyone!

Furnace Repair

Terrible service and questionable business practices. My ventor motor broke down and I called Mckinnon based on my furnace manufacturers website. They charged just for showing up and billed an hour for spending 15 minutes looking at the furnace. They then attempted to gouge on the cost of replacing the part. I called someone else and saved my money.

Hi David,
I am sorry that you had a negative experience with our company. We always explain our pricing when a service call is scheduled so it is always your choice to proceed or not. Our pricing for parts is always competitive but we cannot control other HVAC contractors who want to sell parts at a smaller profit margin. Please contact me as I would be more than willing to refund the amount you paid for the service call as a good faith measure.

Humidifier Replacement

Be careful of these people - I would not recommend working with them. In 2008, I wanted my old humidifier replaced, with a newer filterless model. Mike was courteous on the phone, but after the serviceman did the job, he reported me to saying that I was in safety violation for not enough air circulation near the furnace. I was definitely not going to use them to do the job after the manner in which it was handled. I've had several people work in my basement from enbridge and direct energy, and no-one ever said it was a problem.
UPDATE 2013: Since the humidifier was replaced, they installed the water hose through the ceiling to the shower - and I now have a serious mould problem. They should have never started with this if they couldn't install it properly. Terrible service - terrible company.

Emergency Hot water heater repair

I called for emergency repair on our hot water heater on the Sunday of a holiday weekend. We got a call back in mere moments and a visit within the hour. A challenging situation but the technician kept his calm and solved our problem. Excellent representative of the company and excellent service provided. I highly recommend their services to others! A job well done.

AC install

Be cautious about working with McKinnon. We had various predictable installation issues which McKinnon's owner, Michael, did not foresee, insisted were our fault, and would not fix unless we paid more. He sent aggressive emails during the installation and subsequently, e.g. blaming us for the install taking longer than he had estimated. In retrospect, we should have paid more attention to the negative Homestar reviews and less attention to his calm replies. If you have a straightforward install that goes smoothly, you'll be happy with McKinnon - the crew was first-class (albeit messy, after he told them to hurry up). If Michael misestimates what's required, don't count on him to honour his quote.

Installation of Fujitsu ductless air conditioning system

We were very pleased with the installation of our Fujitsu Ductless unit by McKinnon Heating Cooling. The crew was excellent and did a fabulous job on the installation. Very tidy and professional – both the job and them!! We are looking forward to the warm weather when we can really benefit from a cooler house.

Ductless heatpump for AC

Mckinnon advised us to use the Fujitsu quad zone product with 4 ductless units as we have baseboard heaters on the 2nd floor and want a system that is quiet inside the home and outside for us and our neighbours.

So far the inside units and the outside condensing unit are all quiet. We used them for heating during the current cold snap in late May 2013.

The Mckinnon installers did a great job to plan the installation by proactively listening and discussing options for placing the wall units so as to maximize the integration of the outside piping with the exterior of our home and place the outside condensing unit so as to minimize the noise for us and our neighbours.

The installers also proactively asked for feedback during the installation and refined what they had done / plan to do willingly and with positive body language

The installers kept a clean work site and tidied up at the end of both days they took to install everything.

$10,000.00

Thank you John for your complimentary words, specifically about the installers. As with other installed home products, the heating and cooling equipment is only as good as the installation. I am very proud of the integrity and work ethic of all my employees both in the service and the installation departments.

Air Conditioner Installation

I had a clunky old AC unit (20+ years old) and was overdue for a new energy efficient Air Conditioner. Thanks to Michael and his staff at Mckinnon, we are thrilled with our new AC and just in time too with the warmer days. The installation was done last Friday and Mathew and Ahmad were great - friendly, professional and the kind of people you don't mind coming into your home.

Thank you for your complimentary words. Based on the age and inefficiency of your older air conditioning system, you will be pleasantly surprised by your future summer hydro bills. They will be much lower. You will also receive a nice rebate cheque of $400.00 from the Ontario Power Authority for opting for the higher efficiency system.
