Evaluate Heating and Cooling System

The day we moved into our new house our cooling system was not working. I called McKinnon based on their web site which seemed professional and well-organized.

When I set up the service call, I explained at great length that since the AC was only 2 years old whereas the furnace was 21 years old, I supsected that the problem was with the furnace fan and not the AC. As evidence of this, I indicated that although the basement was chilly, the rest of the house was warm and muggy. Therefore I asked for a service person who could take a look at the furnace in conjunction with the AC.

When the serviceman arrived, he tromped through the house without even offering to take his shoes off. When my wife asked him to check the furnace he huffed and puffed before explaining that he was only an air conditioning guy.

After spending about ten minutes checking the AC sytem, he declared that the AC was fine. (What a surprise. That's why I had asked for someone who could also check the furnace.)

Ironically, despite the serviceman's claim not to a furnace person, he told us we needed a new one. He did not offer a single reason for this other than the age of the furnace.

He then left and sat in his van for about twenty minutes talking on his cell phone before leaving.

Our AC is still not functioning well and I am looking for another company so I can make an informed decision.

When our Visa bill arrived, McKinnon charged us twice for the same service call.

New HVAC system for 3rd storey renovation

We needed a solution - we had to fit an HVAC system into a small space. Michael suggested a Skypak system, provided the specs and showed us exactly where it would be installed. Unfortunately, he was wrong. The unit had to be installed such that it took much more space than he had explained. The guys that delivered the unit ruined the carpet and trim on my stairs. The guys that installed the ducts had to be watched very carefully and asked over and over again to try to reduce the bulkheads - they just didn't care! I had to keep following up on the details, but they hounded us for payment! When they did come back to install the grills on the ducts, they bent them and used mismatched screws. The gas line on the outside of our house is part pliable copper just because they didn't have a long enough ladder. This has been described as "ghetto" by other gas line installers. Also, the hole they drilled in our outside wall was never sealed at all. Michael, if you read this, maybe you'd like to come by and finish the job, properly! To everyone else: If you are looking for any kind of service at all - keep on looking! You won't get it from McKinnon!

For the record, we at Mckinnon, unlike all of the other HVAC contractors you interviewed, did take the time and effort to source a solution for your third floor. As I recall, others came and "scratched their heads" and left leaving you in a crisis. Please feel free to call me anytime. This is the first I have heard of any issues and considering it has been 2 years, I find it quite surprising to hear these comments now. We always return to make things right even if we do "the ball". I always return phone calls and emails and always willing to correct any and all deficiencies our clients have.

Installation of a new furnace and air conditioner

McKinnon was really helpful. We had experienced difficulties with the big supplier in Toronto, so we thought we'd try this smaller firm. There was no disappointment. The sales process was consultative - no pressure, just a lot of good information and options presented. We obtained three other quotes, and while McKinnon wasn't the least expensive, the suggested products made sense to us. And we were confident that the job would be done properly without surprises. We had a minor problem with the thermostat, but the follow-up was prompt and hassle free. We highly recommend this friendly and professional firm.
