Earlier this year, I began contemplating the idea of finishing my basement. After many years of using it as predominantly one big storage area, I decided I would take the plunge and convert the space into something more functional. At a minimum, I knew I wanted a bar, an area for a TV with some built-ins, and a bathroom. No need for a bedroom as I wanted to focus on more of an entertainment vibe. Beyond that wish list, I had no specific ideas with respect to placement of these items, nor had I given much thought to finishings, flooring options, etc.
I started by reaching out to a contractor that was referred to me. The individual came to my house and saw the space in question, and took some measurements. However, it immediately felt as if they were going through the motions, and generally seemed disinterested in the project, and they were disorganized to boot. That contact turned out to be a dead end.
So back to the drawing board. I commenced some research on HomeStars, and that's when I came across Level Up Group, and the multitude of glowing reviews. Based on what everyone was saying and the pictures of their previous renovations, they appeared to be more than qualified to take on my project. So I called Michael and set up a site visit.
When Michael (and Ashley, the designer) arrived and we began talking, I instantly felt at ease and knew Level Up would be the correct choice. We discussed many options, and I could see both of their creative minds at work, imagining various possibilities for what the space could become. This is the benefit of leveraging opinions of experts who have undertaken similar work many times before. They know what things to consider well in advance and can offer practical solutions to customers. At this meeting I also recall Michael suggesting that I don't move some specific ductwork in order to keep costs under control. It was refreshing to hear honest feedback and I appreciate that Michael and Ashley kept me focused.
Later that same day I received an email from Michael with the initial quote. We mutually agreed that the project would start in about 6 weeks, which aligned perfectly with my expectations. Over the course of the next few weeks, Ashley and I collaborated many times regarding the design and made various changes. One such change was the addition of a feature wall which allowed for the 'hiding' of the cold cellar and bathroom doors (see grey wall in pictures below). For each iteration, she would publish a new design/layout document containing 3D renderings of the basement, from many viewpoints. These were very helpful in allowing me to see what the end result would look like. Ashley scheduled a "materials selection" meeting at their location in Vaughan about 2 weeks before work began, where I selected the flooring, shower tiles, accent stone, countertops, etc.
A few days before work stared, Michael provided an updated timeline indicating when each trade would show up and for how many days. Work started as scheduled and never deviated during the entirety of the project. Level Up has seemingly mastered the discipline of project scheduling/management. Avtar (supervisor) oversaw all of the work and was always available whenever I had any questions. All of the trades were prompt and courteous, and were obviously very skilled in their areas of expertise.
So I now have a basement that has far surpassed my initial vision. This only happened because of the combined effort of everyone involved. Needless to say I am very happy with the final outcome and can wholeheartedly recommend Level Up to anyone in the GTA wanting to renovate their basement.
