Mark and his team just completed underpinning our basement. We could not be happier with the work that they did. Mark knew that we were newbies when it came to renovations, and he broke things down and explained things to us every step of the way. Before they even started, Mark came over several times to answer questions that we had (on site so he could point things out). He gave us so many options so that we could fit the project to our budget. In the end, they finished on time and on budget.

Mark and his team demolished the basement, gave us 8.6 foot ceilings, a 20 foot room (getting that 20 foot beam in through the side window took them a full seven hours), gave us all new drains, new backwater valve, a sump pump and poured a beautiful concrete slab. I didn't even know what those things were before I met Mark!

From the moment the project started, Mark's team were amazing; we were home all summer while they were working and they were incredible. The team worked so hard and efficiently. They were so clean! The site was left spotless every day at the end of the work day. The work was meticulous. Mark's team were so kind and played awesome music (with some excellent singing every day). My kids missed them when they were done the job.

This company is the Four Seasons of underpinning. If you are doing research for an underpinner -stop wasting your time now and make yourself a cocktail - you need to go with Mark. Before and after photos below.

Mark and his crew did an excellent job underpinning our basement. His communication style in keeping us informed each step of the way was exceptional. The crew were friendly and did a great job cleaning up at the end of each day. Underpinning is a major undertaking and choosing the right firm is critical. Highly recommended! Mark and team delivered in every capacity. On time, on budget, and the work is wonderful. We’ve done quite a bit of work at house over the past two years, and have been fortunate to work with some wonderful contractors, but Mark stands heads and shoulders above the rest. What you see is what you get - a kind, fair, and intelligent human who treats clients the same no matter where you’re at in the process.

We chose to work with New Depths on account of Mark’s communication and we’re glad we did - it makes all the difference. It’s a scary operation, exposing the foundation of a 100+ year old house, you need someone you trust and someone who’s able to keep you informed about your options. Mark, Maikel and Rafa did just that - any potential issue (signs of mold, a large vertical crack) were dealt with quickly and decisively. We certainly felt they had our best interests at heart, and provided a great balance in advice - straddling cost vs benefit - making it very easy for us to make decisions.

Maikel and Rafa were on site every day - always happy, often signing, and ready to chat and answer questions at any time. It was a pleasure having them around, and I know Rosie the dog misses them.

In terms of work, New Depths completely gutted our basement, underpinned approximately 2.5 feet, installed hydronic loops, all new drains, backwater valve, sump pump/pit/trench and poured, various foundation repair work, and an insulated concrete slab. We had some additional work done such as two very large window openings expanded.

One of the main reasons we had this work done was to address our decaying 100 year clay pipes - which literally disintegrated while the team worked. They were constantly patching them back together to keep our drains in action. I can’t express how much we appreciated that, we were never charged extra and we were never without toilet or sink for more than a couple of hours. These are the things you don’t forget, and a huge reason why I’d recommend New Depths to anyone interested.

They aren’t the cheapest, and not the most expensive. You absolutely get what you pay for, and in the case of New Depths you’re getting great value. A skilled engineer, excellent communicator, and client advocate. Paired with an incredible team - hard working, intelligent and infectious personalities.

The only downside with New Depths is having to wait for availability, I think we waited 10 months, however, we’re glad we did as the experience couldn’t have gone better.

Oh and Mark writes a lot - you’ll need 30 minutes or so to read some of his updates, they are very thorough!

As an engineer, I can appreciate how critical it is to do underpinning safely and with quality! This is not a part of a renovation that you cut corners on. The New Depths team did a fantastic, professional, high quality job on our project. Mark, Michael and the entire team cared about doing the job right, on-time and with quality. They love their craft and have a great culture and it shows. We had a pretty big project 3-months,125 year old house, pretty big footprint, in floor heating and polishing. I was glad when it was finished but I was a bit sad to see the guys go. I really enjoyed getting to know them and work through the project with them. 110% recommend this company!!

New Depths Underpinning is an outstanding group and one I am so happy I had connected to my project in Bloor West Village. Mark is incredibly helpful and in ways that extend well beyond the scope of his project. He made things so easy for me. He’s fully communicative and in one fashion or another goes completely above and beyond in every single interaction with him. His crew is no less awesome; courteous, keep the site clean, and are respectful and thoughtful when imposing on and interacting with the neighbors. The project was done beautifully. On time. On budget. Completely professional. It is a big project but honestly, New Depths is a low-risk decision for anyone considering who to run their underpinning job. I’d recommend them every time and would happily reference Mark personally.

We agonized for years about lowering and underpinning our basement. Would it be worth it? Would we like the result? Could we trust someone to do it right? The simple answer to all of these questions is YES and Mark and the team at New Depths are the reason why. They did an AMAZING job with our basement. From the start Mark was upfront about the potential challenges we might encounter. He and Mike were great communicators and always took the time to explain what they were doing. We got regular updates on their progress and were included on any decisions that needed to be made. The team showed up everyday, worked hard and never left us wondering if we could trust them. The results speak for themselves. We went from 6ft ceilings to 8.6ft and the difference is incredible. Our basement is now beautiful, useful space and we couldn't be happier. The only question we had when it was all done was WHY did we wait so long to do it?

We cannot speak highly enough of Mark and his team at New Depths Underpinning Inc., who recently completed underpinning and lowering the basement in our home in Little Italy. Our project was not without surprises and setbacks. Between uncertainties related to construction projects amid the pandemic, delays acquiring permits from the city, soil that was dense clay, a tight space to work with the homes on our street being very close together and parking that made it challenging to maneuver bin swaps and cement pours, and the discovery of a "hidden" room behind the existing drywall in our basement that was caving in and leaking. Mark and his team took this all with stride. Mark's communication is incredible. He was completely transparent - we always felt clear about where the project was at and any implications related to timeline and cost. Each of Mark's team members are personable, professional, punctual, diligent, and worked well with other contractors who were, at times, working in our basement at the same time. Mark connected us with other excellent contractors, including a plumber and an electrician. Any home project is stressful, especially a structural one like this. Mark made us feel so comfortable and at ease the entire time. He cares about his work and his clients, and it shows. We feel so lucky to have been referred to him. If you're looking to have your basement underpinned and lowered, there is absolutely no reason to look any futher.

If I could give Mark and his amazing team more then 10 I would! Mark was great from the start: he was the only company that would accept the challenge of our old house with a massive tree in our front yard; he consistently communicated with us, always keeping us updated on progress; he reassured our nervous neighbors; he kept on budget and on schedule; his crew was always in a great mood often signing while they work and finally we achieved the amazing results we hoped for! This has been the best experience for us and we have been through many renos. I would highly recommend Mark and his team.
