Safety Issue

Zoom Railings was engaged by our GC to make and install glass railings along the edge of our deck and exterior staircase. We are happy with the look of the railings but questioned during installation why they were gluing the handrail to the glass and if that was sufficient. The Zoom installers assured it was. Fast forward 16 months and two of the four handrail brackets have come apart from the glass. Thank goodness we noticed this before someone leaned on the handrail and fell down the stairs.

We contacted Zoom by phone three times - asking them to come fix the handrail - but no one returned our messages. We contacted another railings company who visited and informed us that a handrail should never be glued to glass as it isnt secure; and questioned how Zoom sleeps at night given that they are liable should anyone get hurt. The new company advised that in order for the handrail to be properly attached (and to code so that it passes inspection) holes are needed in the glass so that the brackets can be secured with screws that pass through the glass. These holes need to be made prior to the glass being tempered so we cant use the existing glass railings. We now have to spend $5000 on two new panes of glass and four new handrail brackets.

Sharing this in case anyone is considering hiring Zoom Railings. Their work looks good but isnt necessarily executed properly or safely.

Balcony Railing

We hired Zoom on short notice after another contractor disappeared. If we had more time we would probably not hire him. His attitude throughout was that he was doing us a big favour, and he was borderline rude and curt on the phone. The railing he delivered was not exactly what we ordered but basically with the railing here and two workers ready to install we just decided to get the ordeal over with. On the positive side he completed the railing within two weeks more or less, and he only changed the installation date three times. The two workers that finally showed up were polite and did a quick and clean job that we hope will last. All in all we think there are better and more professional people out there than Zoom railing.
