Broken spring

About 1.5 yrs ago, one of the springs in our garage broke. Called a couple of places for a quote and availability and Dormaster had the lowest quote (not by much) and was able to come in less than an hour so they got the job.
The repair guy replaced the spring without problems, however, the upsell is almost unavoidable with these types of calls so I was pitched. He did go through and explain which parts should be replaced and why. The rollers were rusty and I agreed to have the set replaced.
Overall, the service call was good, no complaints really.

Service keypad opener

Keypad wasn't working on my 1/2 HP LiftMaster GDO. Called DorMaster and all it was was a 9 volt in the exterior keypad needed changing. The product guide didn't mention this. Tech was at my place for 10 minutes, and then spends 10 minutes saying I needed new rollers and other repairs. We refused, and then he hands over a bill for 70$s. Nice work, obviously won't be calling or recommending DorMaster.

Company Response

Not sure what your complaint here is. You are aware of 65 service call charge to come over which we did and in it we determined that the battery in keypad is the problem. We inspected the rest of the door and was recommended the rollers. I'm not sure if u expected us to just waive off the minimum service call just because it turned out to be a battery. "We do not work for free", the cost to pay for gas, worker, truck, advertising etc is why $65 sc is disclosed at time of booking. Further it is the duty of the tech to inspect and point out any other issues while he's there. This not called "up sale" rather I would comend the tech for his overall inspection.

Garrage door repair

I called garrage door specialists to check my garrage door, the technician came from a company called Door masters.initially they quoted me $65 as labor cost if i get my door fixed. The technician gave me impression that it will get fixed in with in $200 then keep on discarding already installed hardware such as springs, rotters etc as not reusable although my house is just Two years old & finally came up with a bill of $665 which was not expected.then i searched for market price of the parts he installed was quite shocking.he sold 2 springs at $316 while the real cost was $100,Two rotters for 136 while real cost was $30,set of plastic rollers for $138 whereas actual cost was $25.which was quite high so i called the company to complain but they insisted that the prices were ok, which is a real rip off by this company which work with different names but these are same guys and they do not have any real address just websites and telephone numbers. so be aware of these people they will empty your pockets for a very small job and will make it look very big.hope it helps to others.

Broken garage door torsion spring

Company quoted cost of replacing spring for my aluminum double-width garage door was typically $60 per hour labour and $100-150 for Spring. Technician shows up and says I need 2 springs since they don't carry double door springs. Then quoted me $450 to also replace spring shaft bearings and drums. Handed me bill for $570 - huge gouge for basic sheet metal brackets at $70 a piece ... Don't trust this company as they inflate charges wherever they can - ask for a firm up-front quote.

Broken Spring Garage

It is not often I call a company to give feedback- but a technician who came by my home a few days ago was AMAZING! He was very knowledgable about the products and most importanly he was very honest in telling me what I really didn't need. Anyone else would definitely have tried to upsell me on a thousand things I didn't need, but my technicial fixed it very very fast, I didn't pay much and my door is working smoothly! More than thrilled with this service!

Old door jammed open

Our old, heavy, wooden, double garage door had been making a racket for a while. Recently it had lost one wheel, and some others were threatening to come off. Finally it jammed in the open position (fortunately!) and couldn't be moved either manually or with the opener.
Dormaster came the same day, at the scheduled time. They got the door working very quickly at the quoted price. I did have them replace the rest of the hardware (springs especially) which accounts for the price listed here. Now we have essentially a brand new door, except for the tracks and wooden panels themselves. Don't recall it ever running this quietly before.

Garage Door Repair

My garage door opener broke so I called for a replacement. They had a special for $350.00 instaled for a 3/4 HP Liftmaster with chain which the technician and assistant installed, plus torsion springs, rollers, and additional h/w. He told me that the reason the old one broke was that the springs were worn out. He told me it was $125 to replace them. At the end he said they can replace the rollers for a buck 20 (I thought $1.20 ea). I thought the total would be around $500 or so. He wasn't not clear on total cost until he wrote up the final bill for $940.00. Good install and friendly guys, not happy with bloated upselling and no signed quote on total cost. Will call office about the pricing and see what they can do. Not expecting very much. Would not recommend them.
The bill was for:
3/4 hp Garage door opener: 1x $350
Long torsion spring: 1x $125
Short torsion spring: 1x $125
Torsion Drums Set 12 ft door: 1x $55
End Bearing Plate: 1x $55
White Nylon Rollers 10x $12 = $120
Long White Nylon Rollers 2x $10 = 20
Total w/Hst $937.90

Approximate cost of services:
$940.00
What could this company do to improve their services?
When they arrive, provide client with a quote for the total cost for job up front so there are no unpleasant surprises. It's hard to say no when you get the bill and everything is installed.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Find another more honest up front contractor.

Garage Door Repair

Our garage door was acting erratically for a few months. Although it would open fine, upon attempting to close, it would go up and down and the lights on our motor would flicker. Occasionally, it would refuse to stay opened. As we couldn't diagnose the problem ourselves, we called Doormaster.
Without much inspection, the technician decided that the problem must be in the motor. He replaced a capacitor and a logic board, charging us $300 for this (including labor and the service call). Fools that we were, we never asked him how he knew that these were the troublesome parts, and whether it would have been better to just chuck the 15-year old motor and install a new one.
A week later, the exact same problem returned. Turns out their "warranty" is useless and covers only the new parts put in. There is no guarantee that your problem will not recur, and you will still have to pay the exorbitant service call charge a second time.
Needless to say, we did not bother calling Doormaster again.
The problem was not with the motor all along. The chains and the motor were not correctly aligned, the garage door rollers had to be replaced, and the photo eyes at the base of the tracks were dirty and had to be cleaned.
The technician had taken advantage of our ignorance. Buyer beware.

broken garage door wouldn't open

My Garage Door wouldn't open. This company had the biggest ad in the toronto yellow pages and a small 35 dollar intial to come out and look at it. Continous upselling once repairman arrrived. Quoted a price on repairing a component within the job, and after I okayed the repair, he said oh by the way it's twice the cost because that's "there are two of these components and I forgot to mention it. " I had a strong sense that I had been deliberately misled. Would not use again. Next time I need a garage repair done I will ask if the repairman that comes out is on commission. And I will try a company that has a larger fee just to come out in the hopes that I won't be sold something I don't need after they arrive.
