As a result of an accident by a plumber's apprentice, our 95-year old vintage plaster ceiling (with decorative and mouldings) was destroyed. We interviewed a number of tradepeople and settled on Mike as he clearly has a lifetime of experience, was very responsive to our questions and concerns, and was priced reasonably. After giving Mike the go-ahead, he and his quickly crew took down the old ceiling and disposed of it, replaced the lathe, and put in the new plaster ceiling. Mike provided guidance on where to go for new decorative mouldings, picked up the mouldings when they were ready and installed them along with the final plaster coat on the ceiling. We are very pleased with the job, and while while we miss the vintage ceiling we had, the new ceiling is (again) a beautiful feature to our house. We highly recommend Mike and Parkdale Plastering & Lathing.

My wife and I were facing a VERY SERIOUS problem with a sloped ceiling in our master bathroom - it had begin to sag significantly over the winter and the two skylights in the ceiling were cracking and threatening to fall apart. After two months of desperately seeking help from general contractors and roofers (who I really didn't want to call as our experience with roofers has been universally bad), my wife suggested calling Ron at Metro Skylite. We had used Metro to replace two leaking skylights about three years prior, and Ron / Metro did a fine job. I was a little apprehensive as this was a much bigger job than just replacing skylights, but agreed that giving Ron a call was probably a good idea. Ron was highly responsive to my phone call on a Sunday, and came to visit the house the next day. When he saw the state of the bathroom ceiling / roof, he quickly confirmed that the situation was a near-emergency. Within 24 hours he provided a thorough written proposal and patiently addressed a long list of questions we had. In his proposal he also noted that the flashings on the two skylights he installed years before, had been compromised by roofers the year before (see note above re roofers) and would likely leak in the next little while. He advised that these flashings be replaced, and also that an old dormant chimney be removed as its condition was poor and it represented an high potential for leaks into the house. With anyone else, I might have been worried about these "add on" items being unnecessary, but my past experience with Ron made us comfortable that he was sincerely looking out for our best interests. Within days of signing the work order, Ron and his guys were hard at work removing an entire large section of the old roof, and reconstructing it including two new skylights. Despite the work being 3 stories up, and right beside the master bedroom, at the end of each day there was very little mess, inside or outside of the house, including inside the bathroom where they were working -- most of the work was done from the outside. In addition to the agreed scope of work, Ron and his guys identified and corrected problem areas (poor / missing insulation, serious wiring and venting problems with my bathroom ceiling fan, etc) and cleaned up other major deficiencies and messes left buried in the walls and roof by prior "contractors" and roofers. After 5 days, the job was finished beautifully, and my wife and I are resting easy knowing that our house / roof is secure again. Ron took photos of the entire job so that I would have a record of the work, and so that I could appreciate the level of effort and quality that went into the project. As Ron will readily admit to you, Metro Skylite is not the cheapest option, but based on my two experiences with them, the extra dollars are VERY well spent. Ron is quick to provide proof of liability insurance, WSIB waivers, etc., and I STRONGLY encourage other Homestars users to seek these items out from any / every tradesperson / contractor that sets foot in or near the house. If not provided by the tradesperson, go elsewhere ! The guys that work for Ron actually work for Ron - they're not sub-contractors / transient tradespeople - they are long-standing employees that Ron knows, trusts, and pays well to retain. As you can see on his website, Ron has 4 retail locations is not going to run away from his customers in the even that something goes wrong - which I suspect rarely happens.

What could this company do to improve their services?
No advice; they do such a great job
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
As noted above, insist on seeing CURRENT proof of liability insurance and WSIB waiver at a minimum. ALSO, most roofers will tell you they can install skylights, but based on my experiences with roofers, they are ill-equipped to even roof around skylights let alone install them properly. Call Ron !

With a wife and infant at home, and our old central A/C in need of emergency replacement, the fellows from Button Heating were very responsive, professional and knowledgeable. I met with a number of other companies (all highly rated on Homestars), and felt confident that Button Heating did the most thorough review of our needs, the technical requirements, and made an equipment recommendation that reflected decades of experience (rather than that of a salesperson who knew little to nothing). Joe Button was very patient in answering our numerous questions, via several phone calls, and helped us to meet a short deadline for the installation. When an unforeseen technical issue arose (as happens to anyone) during the installation, Button Heating took immediate and full responsibility for making things right - in the modern era, this so rarely happens that I was stunned but grateful. I highly recommend Button Heating and intend on using them for all my A/C service in the future. You can always find cheaper (thought I thought very competitive), but I don't think you'll find better.
