Took 15% deposit, disappeared for 5 months, came to take measurements and demanded to pay 60% deposit before even starting to do anything (it was 30% in the contract). Trevor said that he will use HDF doors instead of wood as promised. When I refused to pay and said that I am cancelling this project Trevor said that he will not return my deposit and said that I have to pay all project cost because he will have nothing to do for 2 weeks because of me. Really?! After saying that they are so busy for 5 months. And then said that he will report me to COLLECTIONS if I don't pay.

Hello Marina,
Yes. We did collect a 15% deposit on booking as are our standard terms. We did not disappear. You were given an estimated start date that was several months away and you accepted this. We are a very busy company and our lead times can vary depending on season. We were in contact with you and available to you up until the project began.
We did not demand a 60% deposit. We advised you that because you were ordering new doors, this materials cost would be payable up front as it was a custom item. When you expressed that you were uncomfortable with this, we immediately offered to waive this payment until the completion of the project so you would feel better.
We did not propose to use HDF doors. We proposed to use maple doors with an HDF center panel as that is what you chose at the beginning of the project. As explained and accepted by you, it is our recommended specification for its resistance to variations in humidity. When you later expressed concern over the HDF panel, we offered you an upgrade to a maple panel at no charge.
You decided to cancel the project a day after work had already begun. As such, you did forfeit your 15% deposit. The additional 20% deposit you agreed to, due 10 days before the start of work, you never paid. We never asked that you pay the entire project cost. We asked that you pay the balance owing on your account.
Unfortunately, although we do have future work booked, these types of cancellations affect us because other customers cannot usually accommodate immediately changing their schedules and moving the dates for their projects. We explained this to you.
The fact is, we not only fulfilled all of our commitments to you, we did everything we possibly could above and beyond our commitments to make sure you were comfortable with the project. However, it seems we were unsuccessful and that is regrettable. I wish you the best of luck.
