Door Installation

I have never in my entire life held up payment for anything and it saddens me that I have to do so with Corbel Renovation Co. The owner, Marv has been deceitful with me on numerous occasions. He did not provide the doors I requested and refuses to make right on it or even acknowledge that he did anything wrong. I want other consumers to beware of this company and how they treated me.

I asked to be quoted on a specific Masonite door out of the only colour catalogue Marv provided me with and I approved the quote believing it was the item I had requested. I had purchased windows from him as well and I had believed we had built a report. I trusted him. That was a big mistake! I was not on site when the door was installed. When I saw it, I told Marv that I did not think this was the same door I ordered and asked him to drop by with another catalogue since it had been months since ordering and I could not locate my copy. Marv did not comply with my request. Eventually I found the catalogue and it was obvious it was NOT the door I ordered. After many discussions and arguments, Marv admitted that he had been unable to order the Masonite door, so he decided to order a completely different door — a KV brand door — without consulting me. He did order a Craftman-style door but it was NOT the one I had asked for. Marv then blamed me for not catching this in his quote and proceeded to point out how “vague” his quote was and stated that this meant that he would surely win in any dispute that went to court! He also told me that it is a Craftsman door that he ordered and a Craftsman door that I wanted and that he could not see any difference between the two. But I can! I am a very detail- oriented person. The door he supplied is an embossed-like look, not a clean straight edge cutout. He finally agreed to reduce my invoiced price of $1299 (installation was extra) for the door only by $300 (his dealer price, not what he quoted me) and suggested that I then purchase the door elsewhere myself and pay another $1299 retail cost for the new door. How is this fair in any way! Especially when it was his choice to purchase another door for me without even discussing it!! When I turned down his offer, he retracted that offer and is now willing to do NOTHING!

When ordering the above door, Marv asked me if I wanted metal or fibreglass. I asked what the difference is. He said that basically with fibreglass you can have a texture and they are more expensive. Since my front doors are painted and you cannot see a texture, I chose to go with metal, which is smooth. He also said that in his experience metal sometimes even holds up better. The door that I received looks like an embossed-like cut out on the panels. And the dentil shelf is also of this bevelled-like look; it does not have crisp sharp edges. Marv said this is because I ordered metal and not fibreglass; that you cannot get that crisp edge with metal. If I had known this I would have chosen fibreglass. I asked the right question, but I did not get a full answer. I recieved a KV door, but I ordered a Masonite brand door. I did not have a colour catalogue with any KV brand doors in it.

Then there was also an issue with the storm doors. I wanted to purchase the Andersen full-view doors through Home Depot, but Marv told me they were of an inferior quality and that he could provide me with a higher quality door by going directly through Andersen. I have a century home with beautifl wooden doors and I wanted to protect them against the elements, so I told him I was willing to pay a bit more for better quality.
He provided me with the Andersen 8 Series, which my contractor confirmed was the exact same door as Home Depot’s 3000 Series that I had originally intended to purchase. Yet I had paid hundreds more for a better quality door. I then spoke with two representatives at Andersen Windows and Doors, who confirmed that the two doors were identical. It was explained that Home Depot, being a big box store, had simply requested their own Series number. Marv did not provide better quality doors and he did not even go directly to Andersen, as can be seen on the shipping label on the packaging.

Then there was the issue with the sills. The wooden sill of my front double French doors, which is 141 year-old years old, is rotted and worn down. I asked Marv if we could replace it, but he said this could not be done. I asked again, “So there is absolutely nothing that can be done about these wooden sills?” He repeated that there was nothing that could be done. The side entry door was ready to be installed on a day that my general contractor dropped by to do something for me. I commented about how I wished I was able to do something about the sill on the side entry. He said it could definitely be replaced, that he has done it many times. I called Marv to tell him that contractor said he could replace it with stone, rather than covering it with metal, which I didn’t feel was aesthetically appropriate for a century home, but was what Marv wanted to do. I told Marv that I was going to have my contractor install the door instead since he could replace the sill. The very next morning Marv’s crew showed up early with a stone sill and the door to be installed. I asked how they got the stone so quickly and I was told that they stock them in their warehouse! Why would he tell me it could not be done and then suddenly be able to do it?

I did not receive any of the doors promised/discussed. I asked Marv to discount the storm doors to the price I would have paid had I gone to Home Depot. He has refused to do anything! He will not acknowledge any wrong doing even though I have provided him with proof that they are not the doors he said he would install. I feel that providing vague quotes in order to squeeze unsubstantiated additional costs out of a customer is shamefull and dishonest. If he was a reputable dealer, he would work hard at making this right, but his only intention seems to be one of greed.

I now feel that, since Marv refused to do anything to correct this wrong-doing, I have no choice to return these doors, go out and repurchase the correct doors elsewhere and not pay Marv anything for them. I have paid, in full, for all the windows and one other door that were in fact what I had asked for.

I am beside myself with his actions and truly disgusted, stressed and frustrated!
