Repair Toilet

My wife had a toilet fail while I was out of town and was recommended Mr. Rooter by a neighbour. Alex came out was friendly and professional. When he started to do the repair he discovered the shutoff valve would not work (seal had aged too much and failed). He sweated a new valve and flex on and then fixed the valve and flapper. The $245 for the flapper and valve was expensive . To replace a valve seal the most cost effective is to get a new one (they are all common for this application) and just replace the old one with the new one. A 15 minute job and a $5 part. This plumber took the expensive route and charged $98 to sweat the parts out and replace them. She obviously did not know better. A shame as this rating could have been 10 but because he took advantage of the situation I cannot recommend him as you cannot trust him.
CUSTOMER RESPONSE
The valve was installed by a "professional" many years ago and the one supplied by you is identical to the one removed! Give me a break!

Approximate cost of services:
$400.00

Company Response

Dear customer, I am very sorry that you feel this way. Being a master plumber for the past 27 years, I would not agree with you on your " most cost effective" repair approach for the valve. The valve that you had was a builder special and was the original valve that was installed when the house was built. It is not the seal (gasket) that is the problem, it is the brass seat (part of the valve body itself) that is the problem, the torn seal is the symptom. If the seat stayed smooth, the seal would never shred. With the seat no longer being smooth, the gasket can longer make a water tight seal against it; and allows water to flow past. By doing it the "most cost effective way," you are putting a bandage on the problem. We are not handymen, we are professional licensed plumbers that do work for our customers as we would do in our own homes. We firmly believe in doing the work once and doing it the right way. Would you not agree that it is better to spend a little more than you planned than a little less than you should have. We live our Code of Values by....."communicating honestly and with purpose."
