Our basement bathroom turned out good. It was getting there that was hard. Right from the beginning Ken would not communicate by the telephone, would not return calls, failed to attend site meetings, threatened to walk off the job, and would not follow his own schedule/timelines. We had a heart to heart just before the project started and he said he would meet me in the middle. I should have let his past actions predict his future performance as it went poorly for the 9 months it took to put in a basement bathroom.
In any argument there are two sides though he will take zero responsibility for his part. I stopped his sub-contractors from working in my home because I was not happy with the work of the prior trade. I expressed frustration with him that he would only send messages through a message board and not talk to me. I pushed him to be collaborative. Deflection and excuses were his response.
Now when you look at his reviews, they are great. I think his team does a wonderful job of insulating his customers from his arrogant and dismissive attitude. Cheers to Katie and the people doing the work. I admire their strength to put up with the real Ken, who once you scratch away his smiling surface is an angry and petty man.
Do yourself a favor and use another contractor. Even though chances are it will go great… if it doesn’t you will be in for an exhausting trip of disappointment. Our bathroom retreat has been marred be the memory of his shortcomings.
Note- I agreed to cost plus 20% on his contract because of his great references. Don’t be fooled. He will not provide subcontractor invoices on request giving question to his authenticity. He also writes a clause into his contract that the homeowner be responsible for his legal costs if there is a dispute.
