hardwood floor refinishing and repair
I asked the fellow refinishing and repairing our hardwood floors if he had enough business and suggested that he list himself on Craigslist. When he replied that he was "not so good with computers", I offered to post a listing for him.
I got Lucius' name and number from my brother whose floors he had also redone. And I have been very pleased with his work at my house. And especially please with the way he has done it. And the price.
His does excellent conscientious work (he borders on perfectionist) at very affordable rates.
What I like best about Lucius work is that in addition to doing excellent work, nothing seems to be too difficult or an obstacle. My brother's place was an easier job as it was empty at the end of an extensive reno. We on the other hand are living in our house and so we had to scramble to clear each room he was going to refinish. We did our best but still, with having to go to work etc., we still had 15% stuff in each room. No Problem. Without complaining Lucius and his crew simply quietly finished the clear out of each room and carried on.
What I also liked about Lucius is that he talked me into, not just refinishing what was there, but doing repairs to make it look almost new. Over the years of renovations and walls being moved, the floors had been badly rebuilt. big square chunks of mismatched patches stuck out like a sore thumb. the other floor people said nothing. Lucius looked at me and said "Listen, do you own this house? If so, then you really should let us do the repairs to make this look right. It will cost $X extra." It sounded like an upsell but I realized it made perfect sense. Why spend money to make an imperfect floor look OK when for a relatively small amount more, it could look almost perfect. My sense too was that it offended Lucius' sense of professionalism to NOT do the repairs and to do a half-baked job. And I trusted him.
Floor refinishing is a pretty messy business, but they did their best to plastic over our bookshelves and closets. The dust has been relatively modest and manageable.
He's also been able to do the work in stages so we didn't have to move out of the house completely (which some floor refinishers tell you you need to do.)
Our 100+ year old floors (I wish I had taken Before pictures) were in a lamentable state. But Lucius just calmly went about doing the necessary repairs. In the end he had to replace about 15% of the floor (and replace several bullnose treads). And the new matches the original beautifully.
We have learned to be wary of trades people promising the moon, but I am glad I trusted Lucius on this job. I cannot recommend him and his crew highly enough.
