LG Fridge Repair

I discovered my 10 year old LG fridge was not working Aug. 26th, and called Quickfix after talking to a couple other repair services who weren't available for several days & due to QuickFix’s advertising of same day service, and in most cases, same day repair, I chose them.

The technician did indeed arrive that evening and was very professional. He diagnosed a faulty capacitor or starter & estimated $300 roughly with a larger capacitor that would last for a decade or more.

I questioned spending $300 on a 10 year old fridge that was only worth around $1100 new, but he convinced me it should work, and that worst case, if that didn't resolve the issue (which we'd have to wait at least 24 hours to see) it would need a new compressor.

I then really questioned the logic of spending roughly $800 to replace a compressor, if needed, but he assured me that those are basically the only things that go wrong on a fridge, other then a minor inexpensive sensor. The basic components are the same in all fridges, and the compressor you use is the same high end one used in expensive Sub-Zero fridges, so once that's done, I'd be good for another 10 or 20 years.

We went ahead with the capacitor, and sure enough, it didn't work so I called the next day to have him come back and replace the compressor. He had told me that you have them in stock at the warehouse, so I again expected same day or next day service. This time I had to be wait for a return call from the special "Customer Service" department as this would be a return visit. It took another day to get this call back, and in the end it took 5 days for a return visit on Aug 31st to have the compressor replaced.

While the job was being done he said there was a small chance he'd have to return to balance the amount of gas in the system as he could underfill it without damage, but overfilling it would damage the system and... it takes 24 hours at least to see if it's successful.

I again waited the 24 hours, but nothing seemed to be happening so I called back to say it did in fact need the gas filled up. Again because I had to deal with the Customer Service dept. and since they can't be called directly without the call going to voicemail, I had to wait for them to call which meant another two days.

The tech returned for the 3rd visit on Sept 2nd to fill the gas up. Quite concerned at this point, I then questioned what could happen beyond the compressor if it didn't work. He told me the last resort would be to flush the system of piping that runs the Puron through all the coils, but that it's a difficult task and very corrosive to the fridge... and would cost an additional $800!

I said, that obviously that would not be happening as I would then have spent $1600 repairing an $1100 fridge that was 10 years old. He assured me though that this wouldn't be the case and that topping up the gas should do the trick and indeed seemed to be helping right away, but that we'd have to wait... that's right, 24 hours to see for sure. Success, by 5pm that day, ice cubes had formed.

I then went away for the long weekend happy only to return Sept 8th to find the fridge not working again, and in fact it was warmer then room temperature inside.

I called Quickfix the next morning, Sept 9th and again was told that only Customer Service could help me and that they would return my call by the end of the next day. I was provided with a direct number though and left a message as well, though I knew it wouldn't help.

I did get a call back at the end of the day from Karina (or something similar) who I had spoken with a week prior as well, and she basically said that there wasn't much they could do as I had been told that the next step was flushing the system for $800.

I argued that had I been warned that this was a possibility from the beginning I wouldn't have gone ahead. I was assured that the $800 spent on the compressor replacement would solve all my ills and last for many years. I agreed that on the final visit, he did warn me about the next repair step, but by then it was too late, and the technician & I discussed the fact that it obviously wasn't worth spending another $800, or a total of $1600 on a fridge of this age and quality.

Karina (?) told me she would discuss the matter with the technician that night or next morning and get back to me by the next day, being Sept 10th.

I anxiously awaited her call that evening and all the following day without receiving it. Finally around 5pm I called the Customer Service line and left a message asking for Karina to call me back ASAP as I have now been without a fridge for over two weeks, and if I need to buy a new one, I have to do so quickly as I'll have to wait another 4 days to several weeks for delivery.

I have still never heard back from them....
