Long distance move

We used Troy Transportation for a move from Calgary to Halifax. I chose Troy as they were a family run business and Alice was wonderful on the phone. We were having a bit of a family crisis and I booked the wrong day for our moving out, thankfully Alice sorted it out easily. The Calgary team who came to pack up the house were fantastic and were in and out in no time. Troy were also storing our items as we were in rented accommodation in Nova Scotia till we purchased a new home. Finally we got our home and were looking forward to getting our furniture and belongings back. It took over a month to get a definate date as ours was not the only shipment to come here. Okay it was not the end of the world so we waited. Finally our items arrived , we were surprised that there were only 2 men to unload as at Calgary there were about 8 people or more . The truck could not get down the driveway so they started to unload a few hundred meters away from the house. This proved too much work for the two man team as we had a very large amount of items and some very heavy items including a slate pool table. Anyway they decided to try and get closer to the house, the driver drove off with the back doors open , spilling lots of boxes, ours and somebody elses all over the drive. Numberous items got broken. Then they got the truck stuck outside our house , after an eternity of trying to move it, and smashing into our home and driving over our water well and driving into the garage, front deck and even bashing into the slate pool table that was unloaded, they admitted defeat and had to call a tow truck to move the truck. Our driveway is now a disaster as the tow truck had to drag it and half our gravel driveway with it. Anyway, lots of our furniture is damaged , beyond repair, items smashed, scratched and missing. The items that left Calgary wrapped in lovely puffy blue sheets as promised on the website, arrived this end wrapped in black plastic bags, not ideal for glass and wood. Our lovely furniture and dining room table are battered and have bits falling off. Completely ruined. Not to mention the damage to the property outside. The whole house shook with the force the truck hit the house. Alice was lovely on the phone and told us to get quotes for all the damage. Complete waste of time as Sofia is involved in this ( now dragging on over a year) and tells us in her nice politeful way that we did not take out extra insurance. Extra insurance does not apply to the building , extra insurance is only for the items removed and if they were packed they way they were promised we would not have so many damaged items. It did not help that the truck drove away with the doors open and stuff fell out the back. Also the slate on the pool table which we had professionaly packaged ( not by Troy) is broken after the truck hit it. Sofia is very clever in her words, basically avoiding the truth which is that they are liable for property damage, what they rely on is that if you take legal action it must be in Toronto. They do not do what they say on the website and will sugar coat everything when their is trouble, do not trust them. They keep saying we never took extra cover , and will not address the situation of the property damage which is completely different from the insurance offered which is only for furniture. Our problems were caused by incompetant staff. To be fair this was never a two man job. This was a huge shipment and far too much for these guys to handle. They had already drove from Toronto and were exhaused and still had another delivery to do and left here 12 hours after they arrived. Cheap labour . I am gutted they way Sofia is treating us. They basically hope you will go away !!!

Move from Montreal to Calgary

Let me start out by saying that I feel people have unrealistic expectations of long distance movers. It is a really stressful time/process, and people are quick to point fingers. I read tons of reviews and had some basic observations on people's feedback, and I definitely psyched myself out and prepared for the worst. If you educate yourself and prepare things accordingly, things should go fairly smoothly.

In a long distance move, people expect their goods to basically be teleported from once city to the next, and that simply isn't the case. Your goods are moved multiple times, transferring to company warehouses, other trucks — usually 3-4 times — so your stuff needs to be packed to take this kind of physical movement. If you are packing your own stuff, PACK WELL, make sure your breakables are appropriately padded, and don't use cheap boxes that will crush or fall apart.

When you are getting a quote, be fair and honest in giving them realistic information. If you say you have a small 1 bedroom, but really have a large, heavily furnished 1 bedroom with lots of stuff, SAY THAT. If you give an inaccurate description as to the amount of your stuff and the real weight goes way over, you only have yourself to blame! Just because you say you have a small amount of stuff, doesn't mean you will get charged for that amount if it isn't true.

And one last thing... you are given windows of time and dates for a reason. If they say between 1pm and 5pm for a pickup, don't be mad if they come towards the end of that window. If they say 5-10 days to get across the country, if it takes 10 days, yes it is at the end of that date span, but it is still on time! All of this stands for ANY moving company! Be realistic!

Anyways, on to my experience with Troy. I chose Troy for our move after getting quotes and reading reviews for about a dozen moving companies. I felt their ratings and reviews vs the cost was fair... not too cheap that it was suspect, but still a very competitive rate.

••• INITIAL CORRESPONDANCE •••
Dealing with Alice and Naomi at Troy was easy and fast. They were quick to respond to emails, both before and during our move, and were quite friendly and professional.

••• THE PICKUP •••
The day before our moving date, we were given a pickup window of 4 hours. The truck arrived, on-time, towards the early side of this window. The movers treated our stuff with respect, tagged everything appropriately, and use moving blankets to wrap furniture where needed. The whole process took about 2 hours for a fully furnished 1 bedroom apartment. It was pleasant and painless. The weight of our stuff was almost exactly the same as our quote. We were quoted 1000-2000 lbs and we had 2100, which was fine and expected as I expressed that our 1 bedroom was on the heavily furnished side.

••• THE DROPOFF •••
We were given a window of 5-10 days for our stuff to arrive. About 7 days into that we were told that our stuff would be arriving on the 10th day, so right on time. The movers arrived exactly when they said they would, at 9am on the dropoff day, and everything was there — nothing misplaced, nothing extra, and everything was in good shape. You can image how relieved we were :) We were moving some extremely breakable, thin, fragile glass items, and NONE of them were broken. The only damage was a small chip on one large item which was entirely due to me preparing it poorly for the move (remember to pack well, people!)

••• OVERALL EXPERIENCE •••
Our moving experience was really great, fairly priced, on time, professional and easy, with no surprises. Troy Transportation were great and, for the price, I really don't think you could expect a better move. **My only comment** would be that our move was subcontracted on the dropoff end (Real Canada Wide Moving, a company out of Edmonton, did the delivery). They were fantastic, but in recommending Troy to other people this would be my only hesitation as it is an unpredictable variable — you have no say in who it is subcontracted out to, and if it is a good company, you're in luck! If not, it is out of your control :(

All in all, thanks to Alice, Naomi and the movers at Troy, and the two nice gentlemen from Real Canada Wide Moving :)

••• P.S. If your movers are doing a good job, don't forget to tip them! $20 per mover seems appropriate. Let them know they're doing a good job, so they continue to do so in a line of ungrateful, hard work!

Moving

My move was from Toronto to Mississauga and thanks to Troy movers my move was painless. Their rates were competitive, and I got great value for my money. The customer rep that I dealt with (Arthur) was patient and ensured that I got the start time that I wanted. The crew was on time and extremely courteous and professional. They took very good care of my belongings – nothing was broken, damaged or misplaced. I would unreservedly recommend Troy Transportation Moving and Storage services.

Move from Toronto to Calgary

I recently moved from Toronto to Calgary and used Troy after assessing my options. I had already left the city when they came to my house to pick up my belongings, but I am told by my family that the movers were exceptionally organized and careful with my possessions, taking the time to label and wrap all fragile and bulky items.

They delivered the goods in Calgary in a timely manner, and I got to see first hand how they operated. Again, I was extremely impressed by not only the organization and care of my goods, but of the efficiency and friendliness of their employees.

I had a painless move thanks to Troy, and would highly recommend them to anyone in need of moving services.
