On Wednesday, December 22, 2010 I contacted this Company (Prestige Garage Door Services) to repair my garage door at home for a broken spring.
Over the phone, they confirmed a $85 labour cost and $70 for broken spring on single garage door for about $150 before tax. When they arrived and before the technician started repair, I again asked that he confirm cost. He said likely what is quoted. I asked if any change that he let me know (inside house at time) before proceeding. He agreed.
After repair completed, he now came back and charged $138 for spring (2x quote) and indicated that the drum was damaged for another $68 without my prior knowledge or consent. I protested that cost was higher, but he now claims that spring was quoted up to $150 alone and had no explanation for drum repair. Total bill was $329.85 after tax. Believe I was over charged by minimum $54 plus tax for spring plus the other repair for $68 plus tax that I did not authorize for a total of $122 plus tax.
Checked with a number of competitors in area. Average labour cost in $65 to $85 range (flat fee), but no one was more than $85 for the spring. Spoke with owner multiple times (Joe Ali) and even though he acknowledged that spring was expensive for job (single residential door) and that second repair was not authorized, he offered no consideration, but to look after me next time? Finally, the Technician said warranty was 3 years parts, 1 year labour and Mr. Ali said 5 years for all, but would not put into writing.
Given the nature of the repair (emergency) that needed to be done in the same day, feel that I was misled on quote and then upsold once repair completed. This industry seems to be very much like the tow truck industry where they prey on a customer’s misfortune and need to resolve ASAP.
