Window and patio door replacement, install of storm door
Our first contact was with the lovely lady in the Newmarket showroom. I have nothing but great things to say about her, honest, knowledgeable and genuine. In fact, it was because of her we decided to go with Northern Comfort. Although I had done my homework on windows and what to look for she showed us other things to look for especially the little details. Rick was our salesman and he met with my husband for the initial measurement and to assess our wants and needs. So far, so good! We met Rick at the showroom to place our order and pay our deposit. He seemed disorganized and it was then that I was a feeling a little uncertain of our decision but he sat with us and made detailed notes and diagrams until all of us were sure of what we were ordering and expecting. I was a little surprised that Rick was discouraging the install of grills in the windows on the back of our house because "no one sees them". To me it was a case of "I see them" and why are you turning away money, albeit a small amount but if this happens with every client it's going to add up.
Moving on...order is placed and then we get the call for the install and the timing was just as they said it would be, GREAT (although Rick didn't know who we were when we called to confirm). The install team comes in and they take out the old windows, install the new ones in great time! All that is left is to do is trim out the windows and address a newly discovered issue with our bay window. Apparently there is a lot of wood rot below the bay window. When we spoke to Rick initially he had mentioned that the install Team would take care of replacing any rotten wood, framing etc as part of the service and showed us an example in the showroom of how the team would frame each window. Unfortunately this comes at an extra cost. It's not the cost that I have an issue with it's how it was handled. We were made to feel like we had done something wrong by the way they had criticized the workmanship and quality of window that had been installed and the way Rick had called to "tell" me in no uncertain terms we "are paying for this". This window was installed before we purchased our home hence the reason it is being replaced. In my mind the gentleman who came to the house and pulled the trim off of the window ought to have made this discovery and addressed it then, this is why we hire the "professionals". The new window is installed and a new lower sill is put in. The gentleman who installed it was so proud of the wood on the lower sill and how great it was going to look once stained and I agreed. However, upon staining it I found that there were several spots where silicone had been spilled onto the wood thus making the stain impermeable so needless to say not as nice as first anticipated.
During the install we encountered some nasty winter weather which included freezing rain. The install team worked through it, even when they had to hammer their ladder rungs to break up the ice. I told them that if they had to leave early due to the weather we completely understood but they worked on.
After 3 days the work is done and windows are installed. We were to have a walk around with the team to ensure all windows are in working order, that didn't happen. I was shown how to use a lock on the patio door and that was it. Luckily on our initial showroom visit we had been shown how to operate the windows (flip out feature for cleaning).
We have since been finding A LOT of debris left behind including sharp metal pieces around the yard. We have a dog and these metal pieces would do a lot of harm to her paws not to mention old insulation and foam if ingested.
To me, a company that is selling windows ought to leave the windows looking pristine, even if its just the glass. Not only are we left with filling gaps between the trim and walls, we are filling holes in the trim before we can paint and having to clean the windows inside and out.
In summary, we are very hesitant to recommend Northern Comfort for the quality of work but would only for the price point and quality of windows (which is offered by many other window companies).
