Floor and stair tread re-finishing, hardwood installation

We had never met Michael before this job. Michael sanded and re-finished an old parquet floor and about 26 treads. He also installed some additional matching hardwood, in a space which abutted the existing floor. He was very competent in all aspects of the job. He was pleasant to deal with. He communicated his schedule if he was delayed or could not make it. He assisted with pick up and delivery of wood and other components, when he could. He has local suppliers which makes the job go smoothly. He stuck to his quote. And when mistakes get made, as they sometimes do, he fixes them. I would highly recommend Michael.

Staircase refinishing

We hired Mike to refinish our circular oak staircase and upper landing area, taking it from a golden oak colour to a colour that would match our ash floors (a medium brown). Mike had a custom stain created which matched the floors pretty closely. He ended up spending a significant amount of time on the finish removal, longer than we both thought - but it was an incredibly difficult task. The treads of the stairs were finished pretty well, I would say 8/10 (a few light spots, but overall well done). However, the handrail wasn't finished nearly as well (I would say 6/10 due to drip marks from the stain and a rough surface from the finish used - a hand-rubbed gel stain and finish might have been better than the stuff typically used for flooring?). Overall we feel we got value for what we paid, and Mike was always on time once the project started. He also brought in extra help to try to ensure he was on-schedule.

Based on the finishing of the stair treads, his professionalism, and his diligence to staying on schedule, I would recommend Mike for hardwood floor refinishing (with the caveat that I would probably be hesitant to recommend him when working with vertical surfaces - however, he may have improved in this area in the past couple of years).

Floors Refinished

We hired Mike as he was recommended to us. He took longer to finish the job than he originally quoted us. Some edges were left unfinished and we have dry spots that look unfinished. Mike also said he would put a nice beading around our fireplace where the hardwood meets the brick and he never did. We now have gaps between the fireplace and the hardwood. We have tried contacting him to return and help us finish the job but he is playing MIA - this went on for months. We had many headaches dealing with Mike, we stressed how important our timeline was and he wouldn’t show up when he scheduled himself. I'd recommend another company with better time management and who strives for customer service.

Laminate 240 sq ft Basboard 1 floor

This was a horrible experience to an already stressful time. It is a little bit my fault for paying in full before the job was done and it was only a small portion that was not finished but it took 2 months for the delivery of that piece (transition piece) and a month before it was delivered, Mike said he had that part but he ignored my emails and his phone always went to voicemail. This was when I tried contacting him to come and finish. In the end I could trust him to finish that transition piece and his compromise was that he will not charge me for that piece but we already had a verbal agreement that this was part of the price and I never received an invoice from him when the job was complete. He also said that he is closing his business and that's why my job was left the way it was so I guess this review is probably not worth much. Also not quite sure if this was fair but the baseboard work took about a half hour and I was charged 180 dollars for labour, this was again my fault for trusting him in giving me a good price because he seemed like a really nice guy. Anyways, If I get a BS response from this review, anyone is free to contact me and I can show the email proof of how Mike handled this job. Renovations are already stressful and I don't want anyone else to have to go through this.

Company Response

From the time the floor was installed, until the delivery of the transition piece was 5 weeks 3 days. Last I checked 1 month is 4.33 weeks. It did take time for the transition piece to get in. The laminate and matching transitions come from China, and if it is out of stock, it can take time to come in stock. The day the floor and trim was complete everything looked great as stated by Andrew. The trim did need to be painted and caluked, as we only install. The price for the trim install is by the running foot and is on par with other flooring and trim companies. The transition piece could not be pre-ordered because there was new tile being installed to the attached spaces. I didnt know at the time what the floor height difference would be. It clearly states in my terms and conditions that transition pieces may need to be ordered and done at a later date due to these type of situations. The transition pieces cost $30-$35 each, and there was two needed (1 was instock and installed). I do not charge for them until they are delivered and Installed. At the time I left, I said It would probably take several weeks to get the transition piece. I was more than willing to come and install it.
To sum it up, the project was priced very fair and competitvly, It was completed on time, and transitions were ordered. This is not a "Big Box" store type of flooring where they give you a transition that is "close", they are all exact matches and can take time to be delivered.
Sorry you feel the way you do, and have a hard time understanding things can take time.

Laminate flooring

I had contacted Micheal to see if it would be possible for him to put in a laminate floor in our basement. We did all our initial contact and product choice via cell phone! I was so pleased with the great job that Michael did and his professional advise for colours when I couldn't get the one I originally wanted. He was prompt and is a very hard worker. Thank you Mike for a job well done...............I have another one for you!

Hardwood Floor Installation

Project took around 6 weeks to complete...and not everything was finished by the time we parted ways. Original quote was 1 week.

Time management was not a strong quality. Workmanship was on par with industry standard. Full work days at the house were far from a regular occurrence.

Some baseboards were not nailed, as he rushed to finish up this job and move on to the next.

As noted in pictures, a particularly good job was done in the powder room. Flashes of brilliance were few and far between, however. I wouldn't feel overly confident recommending Mike to a friend.

Company Response

The project did take longer than expected. This was due to minor defects in the product that I noticed during my inspection of the wood during installation. I had given a rough estimate of a 1 week time line based on just doing the main floor. We ended up doing the whole house instead. The project did still take a while. I was doing my best to deal with the manufacture to get the defective product exchanged. When brining new product into the house, it must acclimatize which again slowed the process down. Taking this long to complete a project is not normal practice for us, as you can see from previous customer reviews. The installation was done exceptionally well. Jason and his wife praised the install skills on a daily basis and even compared it to his parent’s floors saying my method and outcome was far superior. I don’t remember leaving any lose pieces of trim, but it is possible, as mistakes do happen, however I am more than willing to fix anything that might have been over looked. At the end of the job, we did a walk through the whole house prior to the final payment being made, and Jason was satisfied with the job. Not only did I give him a discount at the end of the job because I felt bad for the delay, I also spent around $500 to get extra wood for the job when I was having issues with the manufacturer getting wood exchanged. I did NOT pass this expense onto Jason.
I would have to say, during the whole project, I understood the frustration with the delays, but it was out of my control when waiting on a supplier to determine the product defective and replace the wood. At no time during the installation were there any negative conversations with regards to the installation of the wood.
