Roofing

Academia Roofing completely stripped and replaced our roof over 10 years ago. High quality workmanship and materials has stood the test of time. Ten years later the roof looks like new, even the west and south exposures.
Gord really knows his stuff.

Attic and roof repair

After experiencing serious leaking issues with our roof last winter, I hired an expert to assess the cause of the problem. It was determined that the ventilation in the attic was insufficient, and that the roof was negligently installed when the home was built in 2005. I was told to find a reputable roofing and attic company to remedy the problems. This led me to Gordon Bailey and Academia. From the outset, Gord and his team were entirely professional in the way that they identified the work that needed to be done and in performing the work itself. This included Gord coming to our home with an infrared gun to identify poorly insulated areas of the home that were contributing to our issues. Our job was extremely complex and involved, and we ran into an number of unforeseen issues. While these issues somewhat delayed the completion of the work beyond the time initially estimated by Gord, I was satisfied that Gord and his entire team did their utmost to get the job done right under challenging conditions and were extremely honest and dedicated throughout. They never cut corners, which was of paramount importance to me. The unforeseen work did increase the scope of the job (and therefore the price) from initial estimates, but I was able to deal with Gord on that and arrive at a compromise that I was satisfied with. Also, when there was an issue with a tarp not being tied down properly and being blown by strong wind gusts one evening, Gord answered our call at 10pm and was on-site within 40 minutes to address the issue. I would not hesitate to recommend Academia Roofing to anyone. They may not be the cheapest roofer, but their work is first-rate. Thanks Gord.

complete replacement roof

Academia Roofing replaced our entire roof with Certainteed shingles. The original flashing and valleys had never been properly done and much damage had occurred as a result, Academia expertly replaced all the damaged plywood and remedied all the flashing and valleys. Academia installed high quality metal roof vents appropriate for the size of our attic.

The crew was neat and professional in their work and the job was complete on time and budget.

A follow up service call regarding a minor problem over the garage was taken care of promptly when I called them. I have referred Academia to several friends and associates since our job had been so well done!

Leak repair

The problem: a leak in a flat roof with a deck on top. The bigger problem: no roofer wanted to touch it. Most of the top-rated roofers on Homestars wouldn't even come and look. "We won't touch a deck," "We don't do repairs," "Take the deck off, then call back," were typical responses. Academia's Gord Bailey DID come and look, and in a matter of minutes he had not only deduced the exact location of the leak, but proposed a solution that didn't involve removing any part of the deck: an industrial-strength elastomeric sealant. It worked perfectly and cost a fraction of what it could have. One more thing: another roofer told me "We don't warranty patches," whereas Gord said, "If it still leaks, call me and I'll come by and add more sealant." Top marks, Academia.

Roofing Services

The new shingles and roofing was done with timeliness and cleanliness.

The roofers arrived and set straight to work, taking into account their surrounding setting up tarps and other means to keep the area neat and tidy. As removing old shingles can be messy work there was obviously some mess to be had, but their overall skill and preparation made their clean up afterwards timely and very thorough.

They also replaced a skylight with no mess to be had inside the house.

Overall the services provided were well worth it and have held up very well to this day (almost a year later) with no problems what so ever.

Highly recommended, A++

Roofing

I have known Gordon of Academia Roofing for about 20 years. I had a couple of sky lights removed because of a water problem. Gordon gave me a price which I thought was high. Gordon informed me that there would be more damage than meets the eye, I accepted. I was glad that I did because when the sky lights were removed we discovered that they had been leaking for some time and had rotted the wood in the roof underneath. Well Gordon already knew this and promptly repaired all associated damage and re-installed a new steel roofing system above and beyond building code complete with ice dam protection. I am very happy with Gordon. He is a seasoned veteran who knows the ins and outs plus he is an honest and caring contractor. I would reccomend Academia Roofing to anyone who is not into games.

Three years ago I moved into a house that was in desperate need of repair. The house was built in the early 60’s and the roof was leaking. After doing the research and getting five quotes, I had my lawyer review Academia’s contract and verified the insurance. We could not have been more delighted with the level of service. Although Academia’s quote was more than $50,000 they were not the most expensive nor were they the cheapest. Essentially the whole top of the house needed to be replaced. Gordon and his crew did an excellent job in every respect. They were experienced and knowledgeable, returned calls promptly, repaired more than quoted (at no extra charge!) cleaned up the mess daily and left our home in perfectly repaired and in clean condition. Last year I thought we had a problem with the roof and Gordon arrived promptly, however the roof was just fine and it was great to see Gordon again!

I would not hesitate to recommend Academia Roofing to friends and family.

Dr M.Sunda
I moved into my current home in 2006 and within a month I had to hire a roofing company to change the skylight due to water leak. The same contractor also replaced the shingles at my request and the plywood at his recommendation and later I realized that he did not provide me with adequate explanation for changing the plywood. In spring 0f 2011 there was a water leak from this newly installed skylight. I had a 10yr warranty on this job. I contacted this roofing contractor who was non committal in his response to inspect the leak and did not respond to my repeated calls. It was a desperate situation due to the heavy rainy season and I went through the telephone directory to find a roofing contractor. Gordon Bailey from Academia roofing company responded to my call at 7pm that evening. He replaced the Skylight on the very next day and went into my attic for inspection. Gordon took several pictures and explained to me in detail about the poor workmanship of the previous contractor. The former contractor did not use the tongue and groove plywood and the plywood he installed were not clipped together. The bathroom fan duct was not connected to the outlet on the roof. The skylight he installed was poor quality, not properly installed and had few cracks in it. I hired a company in summer of 2010 to add extra insulation to the attic and this company did not insulate the skylight structure, did not insulate the attic far enough and did not inspect the soffit for blockage.
Gordon Bailey impressed me as highly knowledgeable with the expertise in this industry. I decided to hire this company to replace the roof. This include new plywood, shingles, re-insulation of the attic, new fans for the two bathrooms with timers, fully vent soffit, gutters with large down pipes and leaf screen. This company hired an electrician to replace the six spot lights to current standard before insulating the attic, installed spot lights to the soffit and additional electrical work at my request at no extra coast. They repaired the damage to the interior wall left by the water leak and two Coats of painting.

Gordon was readily available to answerer my calls even late in the evenings, gave me detailed information about the products he installed. Based on my experience their workmanship is high quality, the crew was hard working and did an excellent job in cleaning up. Joe the foreman always seemed pleasant and meticulous at his job. Their cost is expensive but you get what you paid for. It was more cooler inside the house compared to previous summers and more warmer this winter with this new roof. This was a learning experience for me to be vigilant in hiring any contractors in the future.

Thank -you for taking the time to explain in such detail how important it is to make a proper roofing and insulation decision and what the results are of making a bad roofing and insulation decision. This review will hopefully help the public in doing their research with due dilligence.

Mansard-Roof

Assisted Review

By mid-February 2009 due to continuing bitter, windy weather, Gordon Bailey and his company. Academia, were still waiting under contract to safely replace my flat roof and mansard second story shingling. An unseasonably severe thunderstorm tore the roof, and the resulting torrents of water within minutes damaged over half my home, penetrating two stories to the basement. Gordon and his crew came at once, despite being the middle of the night, and shored up the damaged area to prevent further water entry. In the successive days, the crew rebuilt the roof, creating new drainage slopes. The two chimneys were rebuilt, a small adjoining flat roof was renewed, newly effective gutters and downspouts were installed and the shingling of the mansard area was carried out. While the insurance company's contractor did a superb interior renovation over the next four months, Gordon and his assistant Joe worked tirelessly with their crew to re-establish the entire roof and the second floor "skin" of top grade shingles on the steeply sloped mansard roof. They were constantly striving to make the exterior of my home as safe and presentable as possible.

I cannot say enough about the quality of the entire undertaking. I am very pleased with the results and without doubt have one of the handsomest and most effective mansard-roofed homes in the area, thanks to Gordon Bailey and his men.

Re Roof on Toronto Beach Home

Gordon Bailey and his crew from Academia Roofing did an amazing job on our house in the Beach. There were 3 layer of old shingles dating back 30 plus years and zero ventilation. The crew from Academia laid down tarps around the house, spoke to the nieghbours on both sides and were in and out in 3 days! After a brief call from Gord it was decided that the attic insulation needed to be upgraded while there was access to it from the roof....That upgrade alone has made the house warmer and more comfortable.

Thanks Gordon to you and your crew.
