Sam The Handyman

Two of the concrete steps on my back patio cracked. I sent pictures to Sam through email and he provided me with a quote. He was able to do the work two days later and removed the cracked concrete and poured two brand new steps. Both steps fit exactly where the old ones were and look great. Sam was friendly, arrived on time and the job only took one afternoon. He gave me a 5 year warranty and told me to call him if I had any questions.

I found “Sam the Handyman” through his add on Kijiji. I needed repairs done to my front stairs and my porch. I had had a quote to remove the same, but, thought it was not practical to remove a sound concrete porch and replace it with a pressure treated wood one that would require more maintenance. I explained this to Sam when I spoke to him and he said he would come and have a look. He arrived when he said he would. He gave me a quote on the repair and followed it up with a written one via email. He was very knowledgeable, polite, friendly and just an all around nice person.
We agreed (via email) on a time and he & his crew did the repair. It was done and looked great (almost like new). I was extremely impressed with the quality of the work. I couldn't be happier with the result! I have had him quote on other things that I want done and will definitely use him again and recommend him to anyone who wants an honest, reasonable “handyman”.

This is the 2nd time that I am having Sam do work for me. I have an old Victorian house and several bricks were missing or damaged and needed to be replaced. I called Sam and he came over to give me a quote the next day and was able to give me a date when he could do the work on the spot. He came over when he said he would, was quick and efficient and cleaned up right away. Since my house is over 100 years old, some of the bricks were a shape that is not made now. He was able replicate the brick by cutting a brick to the shape. I would without a doubt continue to use Sam for the brick and mortar repair the is required on my house.

We needed to replace our skylight at the main entrance due to being broken ( it was glass and shattered in pieces due to cold winter but not leaking at all), just for look and safety.
After consulting few skylight companies, we bought a new skylight and Sam The Handyman came in to replace it. After they finished their job, ready to leave and get paid, I went to check, I was shocked, the inside of the main entrance where new skylight was installed was in mess from top to bottom. My newly installed granite entrance floor covered in mud, mess, from roof,... the inside border around the inner part of skylight were in terrible shape and unfinished????So I asked to to finished the job before I can pay them. Anyways, the next day it rained and my skylight was leaking from at least 6 different spots, where I had to place containers to collect the rain water. I called him and he was away and he came in 4 days to fix it, Again rained and it was even worse than before was leaking. I called him again, he said he does not know what else to do. I asked him to bring someone else that knows the job to come and fix it, this is disaster. He said no, he refunded less than 1/3 of the cost. I gave 1 star review for him trying to do the job that he was not expert at!!!!! I had to cancel a party on weekend since I could not use my main home entrance, the looks of having containers and towels around to deal with leaking, you can imagine for few weeks of extra work and... until I finally got a great company that did wonderful job but unfortunately not in Homestars, So I would give Him 10 stars review. I had to bring in a different company and pay another 1500.00 to take everything away and re inst ll the skylight for me. He new what he was doing. I wanted to write this review few weeks ago, to share my terrible and very unsatisfactory experience with this company and Sam. Since he did not take the responsibility to do the job that he promised to do, and he did not deserve any penny for such an awful job. I do not want anyone else to go through the nightmare experience that I went through. I am not recommending this company for skylight job at all since they do not know how to install and not know anything about the job they claim they do well. Sorry for the long review.

We had two chimneys that needed to be re-pointed and generally refurbished. Sam and his team came at short notice, accommodated our tight schedule and completed the job. During the work Sam discover a couple of surprises with the chimney and the necessary actions

Sam was quick to respond to my phone call and we were able to sort out the details of the job quickly by email. He was able to schedule the work within my narrow timeframe. I was considering cutting a larger basement window in another location and Sam advised against it, as his trained eye could see that there had been previous issues with the foundation there. Sam knows his trade well, he is good communicator and I really appreciated his honesty. I would recommend Sam to anyone that is looking for mason work.

Sam came recommended and has done work for me before. He is always on time, communicates well, works hard (and with a smile), performs quality work and stands behind it. I recommend him!

Had Sam do a roof repair about 4 months ago..was very pleased with the service..Called him back to do some chimney work and vent repair...set up a time and date..he came it rained, we rescheduled for a time that worked for me...Job was done quick and efficiently..cleaned up before they left..STAYED ON BUDGET...did not try and hit me with extras afterward..If there was additional costs he ate them without a word, If he was under budget I was happy to pay the tip! Will definitely use again and would recommend to my friends and family! Thanks Sam!

Overall, I am very pleased with Sam's work and the interaction: practical problem-solving approach, prompt and courteous service, reasonable fee, and clear written quote.

I had water leaking through the ceiling when it rained. Shingle repair did not work and roofers recommended I replace the chimney it was not in good shape and likely cause of leak. Got several quotes for rebuilds. Sam was only one who visited the site and recommended a repair rather than immediately suggesting full rebuild (which would have cost 3 - 4X more). I appreciate the practical, problem-solving - and money-saving - approach. They completed on time and it looks great. It hasn't rained yet, so I won't know for sure if it worked (which is why I have rated a 9). But he's provided a 5 year warranty, so I feel fairly confident we will solve the problem.

I also had him do selectively tuckpointing as there were holes in the walls where mice may be entering. This was done neatly and comprehensively, given the tight access to certain parts.

Communication with Sam was prompt and courteous. He provided a written quote for approval before starting.

I would given a 10, but I have to wait for the next rain to see how things work out - sorry, but I think that's fair. I hope I can post a follow-up review and bump it up to a 10!
