Flat Roof

****PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS**** Now that I have experience in the land lord game and being a real estate & mortgage broker, these guys should be shut down. They are the absolute worst at what they do. I had to have my flat roof redone 2 years later because they did such a horrible job. J. Asselin talks like he knows everything about everything. If anyone recommends him it is either family or a friend. Take it from an experience professional who learned his lesson and immediately move on to someone else. I wish homestars was around when J.Asselin destroyed my roof.

Horrible Experience

Like many of the others, he did a small flat roof for me at the end of 2007. His son and a few workers did the work. After enduring his tirades of abuse and foul language, in 2011, the owner, Jack, sent someone to apply what amounted to tar paint to fix a leak. My roof is leaking again. Their telephone number is now not in service. Avoid Asselin at all costs!

Flat roof job

AVOID AT ALL (GREAT) COSTS.
They did my flat roof in 2005. They actually came very well recommended. What do I know? They claimed specialization in flat roofs, and offered a 10-year warranty.

Now, it comes time to sell my house and the home inspector gets up on the roof and tells me it's time to replace my 35-year old roof. When I tell him it was done in 2006, he was gobsmacked; he said he had never seen such a poor done. Net, I don't have time to deal with the "warranty", and don't have confidence they'll fix it anyway. I now have to spend $$$ to get it redone – in time to sell the home.

I should have just roofed the house with the new polymer $20 bills; it probably would have been a better job than Asselin did.

flat roof replacement

I was surpised to read the reviews here. I am recommending Asselin to a friend because I have used them on two different occasions to repair two of my flat roofs - most recently in 2006 - and they did a great job and I have never needed a repair on them yet (the 10 year guarantee seems to be fine). I looked them up on homestar to find their phone number and was shocked by the reviews. My experience has been that they are easy and professional to deal with and have done great work. Obviously there are a variety of experiences! I will still recommend them based on my experience.

roof repairs

Before you read all these unflattering reviews, I'd like to say that I've been recommending Asselin Roofing to my clients for years, ever since two of them recommended him to me as reasonably priced and proficient. I's sorry all these other folks had a bad experience, biut I haven't. None of the people I referred Asselin to have ever complained to me about the work, and when asked, seemed quite satisfied. Frankly, though I understand that different people's experiences are not going to conform to my own, and that a negative experience is nore likely to produce a review than a positive one, I was puzzled when I read the negative outpouring of most of these.

I have to agree with the positive one.

Of course we both have our own experiences, but until I get a negative report from any of my clients (BTW, my own experience in communicating with the office is that they always answer the phone and are very helpful and courteous), I'll continue to recommend them. This rating is my honest review of my experience with the company.

Flat roof

The roof replacement work itself was done well, although we had to have them back to address an issue with the roof edge that they didn't point out when they did the work. They said it was the eaves, not the roof, but they clearly should have brought up initially since they recognized the problem immediately upon returning. Customer service is miserable and grumpy. Unlikely to use them again.

Roofing

After noticing leaking in one of the bedrooms we called to get several quotes on a replacement of part of the roof. While the work that was done was very appealing and done for a good price, we had to reschedule a few times because of time issues not on our part. I wouldn't recommend this company but they did a fine job.

Flat Roof Repair

In the fall of 2009, we experienced a leak in our daughter's bedroom. We live in a flat room semi, where the roof is approx. 12ft x 20ft. We called several roofing companies and got quotes from 10-15k. My husband was told by a work collegue to call J Asselin as he had a flat roof and had used the company only months earlier. Jack himself, came and said that roof needed repaired but not replaced as the roof was in "good shape". The workers came the same day (this is not a good sign) and the repair was $3500. He gave a warranty on the work for two years. Six months later the roof began to leak again, we called and were told that as it was a heavy rain the rain probably came in from the flashing...keep an eye out they said and call us back. The spring came and went and the leak didn't reappear until another heavy rainfall in Sept. 2010. This time the water came in in four places and the drywall in our upstairs hall and ceiling heaved, the tape came off, the wood floor was damaged - this leak was less than two feet from the original problem. We called them back again as the work was under warranty and Jack and his crew came out within the hour. They said it wasn't a faulty first repair, but a pocket in the roof had caved in. When they took away the old roof they found it was missing insulation, there were rotten boards etc. All of this would need to be repaired for the cost of $4000. Why not replace the whole roof, I asked, as this patch was going to cover 2/3 of my roof and involved going around the skylight. Not necessary, your roof is fine Jack said. I argued with my husband about having Asselin do the repair as I did not feel confident with the company now. If we went with them, we were going to be up to $7500 for repairs and still had to replace the drywall, repaint, and refloor where the roof had leaked! We were halfway to paying for thee new roof we couldn't afford. Against my better judgement, Asselin did the repair and six months later the water began POURING in the ceiling in the same leaky spot and this time made it's way to the main floor and damaged the dining room ceiling and hardwood floor. When we called them back to discuss how they would repay us for the damages incurred and to mention we were in contact with a lawyer, we couldn't get through. Their business location on Queen Street East was sold several months ago. We are in the process of finding a new roofer to replace the whole roof and skylight, and re-plaster and refloor the ongoing damages from each rainfall. Their roof repair has caused several areas of high and low depressions, which causes the roof to pool rather than drain. As a new roof is 10k and the indoor repairs have been 5k, the J. Asselin roofing repair has now cost us $22,000 for a mere patch. Do your research, use a reputable company and do go with any company that can be there the same day!

flat roof replacement

Asselin replaced my flat roof in 2004 with a 10 year warranty. I had a leak in 2006 where the plumbing stack comes up through the roof. The owner Jack was very unpleasant to deal with, but they did repair it at the time. Now, I am concerned about two problems with my roof: 2 large blisters and extensive cracking around the edges were the flashing is embedded into the asphalt. I called today and spoke to Jack. I did not mention my name or address, but when I described the problems he claimed to "remember my roof" and proceeded to tell me these were normal conditions. He also said it is "impossible for a five ply rood to leak". I mentioned it did leak a few years ago and he repaired it, therefore it is not impossible for the roof to leak, which he shrugged off and mentioned the impossibility a few more times in the conversation. At one point he mentioned they would come look at my roof, so I asked that he do so. Then he said he will come only if there is a leak. I insisted that he send somebody since he offered, then it got really weird. He said he was with a customer on their roof and I must call the office and speak to "one of the girls" to set up the visit. But I had called his office and his "girl" answered the phone, then passed it to him! So the entire conversation was bizarre. I worry about the blisters and cracking developing leaks. Based on all the other reviews, I suppose I'll be paying for another company to make the repairs. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!!!
