Garage Door Opener

My wife bought my garage door opener from Sears. The agent told her that the opener carries a life time warranty on the chain (belt). She, as most clients, did not read the lengthy small font paragraphs in the warranty.
We took care of the opener by cleaning and lubricating its moving parts. Recently, a loud noise was heard whenever the opener opens or closes the door.
I spent more than one hour trying to talk to an agent on the phone to schedule a check up and repair. The story ended that Sears warranty covers nothing but the chain. Even providing that chain free must be preceded by a private technician's report stating that the chain needs replacement, then the customer waits until he receives the part from Sears, and finally replaces the part on his own or by a private technician. So, if the chain costs $100, the customer might have to pay about $200 or more for 2 visits of a private technician to complete the job. In a nutshell:
1- Pay a little bit more for a seller whose warranty provides parts, maintenance, and repair over a well defined period,
2- Preferably, buy additional extended warranty,
3- Read, thoroughly, the small font paragraphs in warranties before buying any goods.

new couch set

I recently purchased my living room set at Sears and it looks great. Sears has the Natuzzi couches that look fantastic and I just had to buy it for my new condo. It was a bit pricey but worth every dollar and fits perfectly in my space. It's not too bulky and oversized and it's what I was looking for. The Sears salesperson was nice too, very helpfull and informative....not pushy at all. I will definitely shop there again.

Window coverings

I ordered window coverings for my son's bedroom window and shutters for my breakfast room and family room windows.
The shade for my son's room was installed very quickly, and I am totally satisfied. However I am still waiting to have the Shade o matic shutters to be installed. The installer came about 3 weeks ago and the frame was the wrong size. I put the amount on my Sears card, and I have to say they have not yet charged me for any of the work.

Renaissance Window Installation (4)

As part of an Energy Audit Retrofit we had Sears install four (out of a total of 10) Renaissance Windows. The sales associate from Sears was very helpful in recommending styles and the best options for our house (i.e. going with a retrofit or a full ripout) and seemed knowledgeable about his and other products. We found the price to be a bit high but the Sears' equal billing financing option helped balance out the equation.

The installers did an acceptable job with the installation but we did encounter some issues. In one case, the foam expanded out of the frame and through the outside caulking. I ended up cleaning that up. The other issue was with the interior side of the same window where the installer didn't remove a bracket and caulked around it and also didn't caulk down one side of the window. Another thing for me to address. At a later time when we pointed this out to the sales associate (when were looking to get additional windows) he indicated that he could fix the issue but he never followed up. With that said, I am mostly satisifed with the Sears product and installation and our Eco Audit did not reveal any significant issues although I did notice they seem to leak a bit more from the window drain (when compared to the other installation).

We chose not to go with the additional five windows and a patio door because the second Sears quote was approximately 35% more than another quote for a product that was equal or better in quality. Based on my experience with the first set of windows I didn't see a good reason to justify that premium.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Price should be more competitive.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Be careful of low finance rates. When financing, compare the cost of another product/installer and determine how much of a premium being is being paid to get the low financing. It migh be cheaper in the long run to find alternate financing sources.

New Furniture

A few years ago, my family purchased a new couch and love-seat from the Sears Home store. We received great assistance from the attendants at the store and it didn't take long for us to find our couches, despite their large selection. The delivery was prompt and we did not run into any issues with the delivery staff. It has been almost 5 years now and our couches have lasted very well.

Bedroom Furniture

I was in search of an affordable, yet comfortable futon for school. I wanted something good quality. The sales associate was wonderful and showed me a futon they had on sale at the time - only $150. She emplained her daughter has the same one and is very happy with it. During the purchase process, the saleswoman was polite and very helpful; she knew what she was doing and was very good at it. The futon arrived on time within the date she provided. She made sure I knew the return policy with Sears and the warranty information on the product. The store itself was well laid out and had a good assortment of products; it was not cluttered, as most furnitire/home accessory stores are.

Warranty

We had bought a matress 7 years ago and the matress top layer started to buckle. So I called Sears Credit Card because I did not have my bill any more and they just looked it up and said the matress is still under warranty to goto the Sears Home store where I purchased the matress the 1st time and pick out a new one. So we went and picked out a new matress for the same value and we had it delivered for free in 3 days! The saled people were a great help, everyone was very kind no hassles at all!!
