Porch and balcony Rebuild

I had Spencer Contracting build a balcony on the 2nd floor above a porch which they also replaced at the same time. Within 6 months the floor of the balcony started to move off the edge of the roof below. Nick Spencer tried cheap ways to fix it but when he finally agreed (after 3 years) that it had to be replaced, he made me pay for it rather than admit it was his bad workmanship at fault. In the process, the roof above the porch was pierced and I now get rain pouring through the porch ceiling. He refused to fix that.
The carpenter he employs is very talented but I will never hire the company again.

Repair fascia and install new evestrough

I recently used N. Spencer Contracting for a small job to replace rotting fascia boards and install new evestrough and downpipes on a back extension. Their quote was significantly lower than the well known roofers, and they came recommended by a neighbor. The installers confirmed all the required elements of the job before starting and verified on a couple of occasions during the day that the work was meeting my expectations which had never happened to me before. They worked carefully even meticulously and did not hurry the job at all. They also did a thorough clean-up afterwards.

small addition, new deck

This spring, early summer we had a new addition built off the kitchen area as well as a fantastic new deck. For us, this was a major job and we were very nervous about the scale of the project and the possibility of things going wrong. But, we quickly learned how competent Gord and his team are. Great workers and great guys! A nice combination! We wholeheartedly recommend them.

New Roof

Nick had his roofer do a new roof for us 3 years ago. Two years ago it leaked in and did lots of damage. His roofer "sealed the seams" and said there was nothing else wrong. To his credit he did some repairs to the interior damage - though the quality of work was poor. Last year - it leaked in again. His roofer again just "sealed the seams". He said he wouldn't fix the inside damage and told us to "take him to court". This summer - a new leak appeared. His roofer said there was nothing wrong with his roof and it was leaking somewhere else. They did nothing. We hired a very reputable roofer who was appalled at the workmanship. They reused old flashing and nailed thru the membrane. No wonder it leaked! This guy is not to be trusted.

New Roof and backyard interlocking brick and stairs repaired and new as well as fence straightening. ,

I enjoyed the artistic talent of the actual work team. The head of the crew was an amazing diligent worker(very artistic) and I would recommend him to anyone. Unfortunately I was on holiday when they came back to do minor repairs and finishing to straignten the fence and fix new cracks. The employees that were sent to do this have not finished and I expect they will return this month to put the sand between the bricks and fill a few cracks that I discussed not with the team but with the company owner. Somehow they ended up dumping all the fence hole sand into my plant garden and I have lost a few plants, however I am sure this will all be rectified and my rating move to a full 10. This not being done as discussed is lost somewhere in the communication between Nick and the team.

Plumbing repair and wall reconstruction

I’ve dealt with Spencer Contracting on three occasions, but have mixed feelings about the experience. The quality of the work has been consistently good, but other difficulties came up in the last job. I had a minor plumbing problem (a leaking pipe behind a basement wall). A small portion of the wall had to be taken out, the pipe repaired and the wall reconstructed. The plumbing portion of the job took between two to two and a half hours. I was charged for half a day’s work (four hours). "Oh, that’s standard," said the supervisor. Is it? Maybe so, but there was no discussion of this in advance--only when I was handed the invoice at the end of the job. Had I known I could have easily found an hour and a half to two hour's worth of other plumbing chores to make up for the work I had paid for. No. When I complained to the supervisor he told me "Maybe you should have gone with a handyman." Maybe he should have discussed that with me before agreeing to undertake the project in the first place.

So I've been happy with the quality of the work of Spencer Contracting. They use good people. But the communication has been poor and the pricing has been inconsistent so . . . . caveat emptor.

Full house restoration/renovation

Last year we undertook the restoration/renovation of a late 1920s house in the East End. We contracted N.Spencer Contracting to take on almost all aspects of this project including; rewiring the entire house, new plumbing, radiant heat flooring, gutting and building a new bathroom and kitchen, french doors, windows, building a covered veranda and fence as well as a host of interior finish jobs and detail work.
We couldn't have been more pleased with the results. Gord and the team were fantastic throughout the entire project. Gord was always available by phone and inperson and the project team were the best we had ever worked with. Once the job began, the team was at the house every day util the project was completed. Even with living in the house for much of the project, the professionalism of Gord and his team kept our stress levels to a minimum. No easy feat!

We couldn't recommend N. Spencer Contracting highly enough.
They will be the only contractor on our list for any future projects.

Cobblestones

First of all, we had met Nick years before about a siding job that he actually talked us out of - we were very impressed with his honesty and decided to get a quote from him for cobblestone work. His price was not the lowest ... but we've made the mistake of going that route once before and won't make it again.

Nick selects only very competent subcontractors and checks out their work and stands behind them. He was quick to resolve any concerns we had, and resolved them to our complete satisfaction.

Unlike those "cheap" guys we used once and are, unfortunately, reminded of every time we look at their amateur work, we have never regretted the little bit extra that we paid for Nick's services.

By the way, this is no honeymoon review - I am writing this review five years after the work was done and I am still impressed.

We have used him again since then - about 3 or 4 years ago ... also a fantastic job.

Bottom line, the work is solid and impressive, his price is fair and his integrity is exceptional. No wonder he gets a 10.

Restoration of extension

Gord and the Spencer crew tackled a difficult restoration project for us with speed, care and perfect professionalism. They took it all in stride - and stayed on schedule despite some surprises: the worst was finding termites in the ceiling! Gord took a long look and said "Don't worry Norm, we'll fix it." - and they did. Over about 8 weeks we did foundation repairs, a new roof, floor joists and sub-floor, radiant hot water heating, insulation, new siding, electrical, plumbing, drywall and floor tile, and I never saw a shortcut or a bad compromise. They even kept the neighbours happy! I installed my own kitchen in the restored space, but the new straight walls and level floors made that easy. While the Spencer quote was not the lowest, it wasn't the highest either. The money was handled perfectly: 10% up front and weekly draw against the balance, with the final payment not asked for until the job was totally finished. They earned my respect and get my highest recommendation.
