new roof, skylights

After buying a house in July 2011, we noticed our roof was pretty warped (and a roofer came by to inspect and almost fell through our roof; the plywood was shot in certain areas). The problem was we didn't have enough air intake.

We had a number of different roofers come by. Mega City Roofing gave us a quote. and Tom seemed pretty trustworthy (we read the reviews here). We paid a little more for a 15 year warranty. And in August, Tom and his company came by and did the work. Cleanup was pretty good, and everyone seemed friendly.

The first problem occurred during the start of the cold season. We could feel a draft in our skylights. I called Tom, and he came out and used Great Stuff spray foam to fill gaps where wind was getting through. The draft situation is much better now.

A far more serious problem developed during the winter. Condensation was collecting in our attic, and the water was dripping through to the second floor of the house through the ceiling. Our attic was so wet and dripping you could have probably taken a shower. At the time, we were very upset because this situation was the reason we paid 9K to avoid. The lack of air intake and warped plywood was the reason we had roofers basically replace our roof. I complained (somewhat bitterly) to Tom, and he eventually agreed to come out to take a look. 9K is a lot of money to me, and at the time when his company did work on our roof, he said we didn't need whirlybird turbines on our roof. The situation was pretty unpleasant.

Well, as it turns out, the house builder, Monarch (according to the real estate listing), had 2 by 4s and drywall in behind the soffits, essentially blocking all air intake. Tom got his worker to come by, and they installed two whirlybird turbines. They also went around the perimeter of the house knocking out pieces of the 2 by 4s to let air intake through. I can't blame Tom for not knowing the builder decided to completely seal off any possibility of air intake to our attic when building the house. Tom said he'd never seen anything like that before, and I was also pretty flabbergasted.

Anyway, although I could tell Tom didn't really want to come by (probably because I had been fairly accusatory), he did (a lot of contractors don't bother after they get their money), and he did what he could to help resolve my concerns. Our attic is dryer now (and seems to be drying out; plywood, from what I can see just popping my head up in the attic seems dry). I'm not sure if the problem is completely resolved, but it's certainly much better than it was. I'm thankful that Tom came by again and helped us out. Most contractors probably would have left us hanging out to dry (literally).

In the end, Mega City Roofing stands by their work. A lot of companies don't. Thank you, Tom
