Ivan's Electric Ltd - No Longer in Business

I phoned Ivan Electric to check my aluminum wiring and this is what he charged, 90.00 service, 270.00 to check plugs, 550.00 to replace 2 plugs with GFCI plugs, 180.00 for dimmer switch as the knob had fell off when he turned it on, 20.00 for two used fuses which sell for 8.98 at Lowes. I found the box for the plugs and it said they should not be used with aluminum wiring. The plugs in question cost approx 13.51 ea and the dimmer switch approx 10-15. He invoiced me under Insight Electric, I spoke with him today and he was quite aggressive. He is also on alert with BBB and his license number is in question. I really think this man should be investigated.

We called on a Saturday to do some electrical wiring. It took 45 minutes. No estimate was given. It cost us 800.00 dollars. We called to complain, but we were told it was a Saturday rate. It was our mistake to call this place.

We lost power to most of our house yesterday and didn't know why so we called this company. The electrician arrived, tested some stuff and said one of the large fuses had blown. He looked at some switches my husband had replaced, said they were ok, replaced the fuse and charged us $1,096.00! The invoice said he was at our house for 4 hours when he was only there for 2. $270.00 for the house call. NEVER use this man he is a rip off artist. He even called me later in the evening to say I had wrecked his truck getting out of my car. His truck looks like it is held together with duct tape and there is not a mark on my car.
Buyer beware.

We've had several work done in our house & used the Yellow Pages and never had a bad experience until we called Ivan's Electric. We thought he was the same electrician we used the previous years so we called him over to check on our dish washer. He checked the fuses and check the control on the dish washer and said that it was dead. He was done in less than an hour and charged us $336!!! he didn't even fix the dishwasher! This person has to be stopped from praying on unsuspecting people like us. Shame on you Ivan!

I guess some people go through their whole life without meeting a Shyster, well after 70 years, I finally met one last night, namely Ivan's Electric. A fuse blew in my home which I couldn't fix (didn't have the right fuses ) & had I been able to go on line, I would NOT have called Ivan. He came just after 10 pm, left just before 11 pm, & charged me $890.00. $360.00 per hr. for a service call, times 2 because it was Sunday; $60.00 for 2 fuses plus taxes. When I said I thought it was extremely high, he said he was giving me a deal because he should have charged me for 3 hrs. Is there no governing body that can set prices that companies can charge? If not, there should be!!

I called Ivan's for several little jobs that needed done at my home: Two timer switch installations, a baseboard heater replacement, and two new circuit breakers. The quote for all that, including HST was over $800. That seemed outrageous so I declined and was then told I was to pay $180 for the diagnostic work (which took 20 minutes). Since I had agreed to a minimum fee of $90 over the phone, I paid that plus HST. I called another electrician and was quoted 2 -3 hundred for the entire job. Thank heavens I had the sense not to throw good money after bad.

We found Ivan's Electric Limited contact information on our circuit box, and so when we needed an electrician, we called him, thinking he would be familiar with our home. Our mistake? We neglected to get an estimate up front. He came here and did the following repairs: Tested the dimmer switch & dining room light fixture, replaced dimmer switch & one mini socket that we had purchased, tested 3 receptacles & the kitchen light switch, rewired 1 receptacle & kitchen light switch, replaced a circuit breaker on the main electrical panel. His fee? $1,050 plus tax. (A $270 "travel fee" to go 27 km from his business to our home), $630 for labour and $150 for parts ($55 for the dimmer switch and $90 for the circuit breaker). Other electrical contractors have since quoted us fees ranging from $270 - $330 for the same work.

We have had Ivan's Electric over to our home a number of times. In fact, I am writing this as I need them over to do some additional work and that confidence in the firm and their work instigated the review.

I cannot offer any advice on their pricing as it was mid range when I got the first quote and gave them the work with the decision to go with them based on their practical approach to solving my particular requirments at that time. Since then, I have gone with them, calling and setting up an appointment with out going out for other quotes.

When it comes to electrical, I feel it is to easy to make a mistake and confidence in the trade person is all important. I have that with Ivan's

My sump pump failed and my basement was flooding. He checked it out and immediately wanted $2500 and wanted my credit card. Being in a panic I gave it to him. He got a new sump pump and them said the switch to turn on my old sump pump had to be changed to a plug, and he had to charge me $300 for that. He left and told me if the sump pump ran too long to unplug it and he would come back and do an adjustment. The sump pump stopped on it's own but did not start again and the next morning I had a worse flood than the day before. I put on sandles and rushed to the sump pump and pushed down the rod in the middle as I had seen him do the night before and the sump pump again pumped out the water. I called him and he said it was his grandchild's birthday and if he could come the next day to do adjustment. I said fine but I constantly had to monitor the sump pump that day and night until he arrived. All for $2800!!
