Hallway and kitchen cabinets and breakfast nook
One of the best customer experiences I've had in my life.
We've been thinking of custom-building cabinets in our hallway to use the space to the max, as well as building a cozy breakfast nook along with a pantry in our kitchen. I found Ewen's profile while googling for someone who could do this and I was very impressed with all the reviews he received - and especially the way he seemed to have handled one not so great review. I felt reassured that he would try to do his best to ensure our satisfaction.
We've exchanged a few emails, I shared my "blueprint" drawings of what I envisioned in both areas, he provided me with a price quote.
Then he came for a visit to discuss what we wanted and to take measurements. He was always very friendly and was obviously knowledgeable about his profession - as well as passionate.
Despite being very busy, he was able to fit our project earlier than he originally expected (we really wanted to have the hallway done before winter started and the mess of shoes, hats, mitts etc. that comes with it).
He shared final sketches and quote, we paid the first deposit and he started the work.
The only thing we needed to do was to go to a store, look at available stain colours and choose the one we liked. The swatches in the store were so tiny that we couldn't really imagine what it would look like, so instead we veered into a kitchen cabinet department and sent photos of a cabinet door we liked (colout/treatment), along with the picture of the product info so that he could find the same door.
We felt giddy and nervous at the same time - it's an expensive project and it's a leap of faith to hire someone out of yellow pages, so to speak, with no recos other than online reviews.
The day he brought the furniture and started unloading, I pointed out it wasn't the colour we chose. Now I have to say - Ewen handled this EXTREMELY professionally. We looked at the pics I sent him, discussed the original conversations we had on colour, and then he shrugged his shoulders and said he was going to load all the stuff back into his van and go re-do the work.
I felt pretty terrible about wasting hours if not days of his time.
He messaged me later in the day, saying he dropped by the store again and it turned out the store employee showed him the wrong door the first time around. Mystery solved.
In any case, he re-did the finish and when he brought the furniture in 2 weeks, I couldn't be happier. I absolutely LOVE how it looks. Beautiful rustic-looking wood, precisely the colour that we wanted. The workmanship is of the highest level, too - everything was precise and high-quality. I still keep stroking the wood, it's just so beautiful.
Our kids LOVE sitting in the breakfast nook, nice and cozy. And with all the shelves/drawers downstairs now everyone has a designated place for all the shoes, scarves, and hats. It's awesome!
I would highly recommend hiring Ewen for any work around the house. He's knowledgeable, can give an advice, very thorough, professional and - what's probably most important of all - honest. One of the best customer experiences I've had in my life. He didn't leave until he was a 100% sure we were satisfied.
