roof and eavestrough replacement

Contex has replaced the three sections of my roof and my front and back eavetroughs over the past two years. They are probably not the cheapest company out there, but after they did the first job they earned my trust enough to bring them back twice more. I did note an earlier poster's problem with delayed arrival times in the busier season, but I found that a few phone calls did the trick and they came to do the job soon enough. I had an issue with a small leak at one point, which they misdiagnosed at first but eventually found and repaired (it was coming from an old section of the roof). I found Phil a pleasure to deal with, and their workers were extremely diligent and tidy. Problems can arise with any job, but I would recommend them because they care about their reputation and want to keep their customers happy. My house is watertight.

When it's time to move to a new house, if I need a new roof I will call them first.

Flat roof curbs for an exhust system

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the great service you have provided my business. I needed some work done to prepare my roof for an exhaust system. You came out to the site and got on the roof to take a look at what needed to be done. By the next day there was a quote in my email with all the details.

Once the job had the green light you made sure that I was taken care of as fast as you could.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend your company. Thanks for a job well done.

Roofing, shingles removed and replaced on peak, bitumen flat roof removed and replaced, fascia, etc.

We had a leak in our flat roof which appeared in the middle of the office ceiling.

We chose Contex to replace both the flat and peaked portions, which included removal of the existing shingles and bitumen, related fascia and spout work, and some carpentry. Contex initially estimated that they would start in November 2005, weather permitting.

I understand it's hard to control such things, but they were way off their estimate. We called every week after their initial estimated date, and they consistently responded with a generic "should be in a week or so".

After eight weeks of this, they finally sent a representative around, who claimed that it was very difficult for them to judge their availability on account of the maturity of their contract workers - I will not stoop to use the terminology that he used, but it was anything but positive.

Their peaked roofing team arrived Jan 17th.

Fortunately my temporary repairs (which consisted of a large blue tarp nailed into the existing shingles, ringed with tar to prevent water running beneath it) somehow lasted during the severe weather leading up to their arrival.

They tore out my work and replaced the peaked shingles.

I was not satisfied at all with the work. There was a board missing on the peaked roof above the rear exit, which they eventually replaced, but they'd run out of the proper shingles (see attached pictures), and had to use a "close match", which is a different colour.

They also did a shoddy job cleaning up - they had to send another group back to re-clean the front drive... to this day I find pieces of shingle and nails in the soil in my front garden every spring.

But worst of all was that they have a different team that handles the flat portion of the roof. They couldn't guarantee when this team would arrive, but estimated a week or so. It took almost three.

Meanwhile, despite it being February, we had rain in Toronto. We were dismayed to see brownish water leaking through the half-repaired roof and down the walls of four rooms in my house. I should note that the initial leak was only in a single room, which ironically wasn't one of the four that suffered water damage from this mid-Feb storm.

My own patchwork repairs had managed to keep water out of my house for almost four months, while somehow this professional roofing company couldn't put temporary measures in place to prevent leakage for a mere three weeks. My only guess is that they left the edge between the peaked roof and the flat roof exposed, or inadequately covered, and that the rainwater leaked freely into the house.

Responding to my concerns, they sent a man to fix the leak while we were still awaiting the arrival of the flat-roofing team. Despite his work, a few days later it rained again, and the leaks continued.

In the end, I had to hire another contractor to come and repair the ceiling in one of the rooms as a direct result of the water damage that occurred between the time that Contex's shingled team did their work and the time that the flat team arrived to finish the job. This added significantly to the cost of the roof repairs. And this does not take into account our own time and effort spent repainting three of the rooms right away, and then one again a month later after the wall bubbled (requiring peeling years of wallpaper and paint from the wall and sanding it down as best I could).

I knew that Contex had a guarantee, so I asked if there was any way to recoup some of this additional cost. Sadly, they informed me that their contract specifically states that they are not responsible for any damages that occur while they are doing their work. They told me that this includes any time between the arrival of their two separate teams.

When I asked why the Shingle team couldn't have done a temporary patch job, similar to my own, he could offer no response.

Finally, my girlfriend received inappropriate attention from one of their workers which made her quite uncomfortable thereafter whenever they had to use the facilities.

As to whether the resulting job was sufficient, I cannot say. They attempted to schedule a walk-through to show us the roof and describe the work, but we weren't able to find a mutually agreeable time within the first month or so. We attempted one last time to schedule the inspection but they never returned our call.

By then I was too frustrated to pursue them any longer.

I strongly advise anyone dealing with Contex to question them about their coverage and what damages they will take responsibility for... not only while they're doing the work, but also between times that their teams might be available.

Company Response

Having to respond 2 ½ years after the job was completed is difficult. However, I have read the review and have tried to get to the core of the situation. I am very surprised at what I read, and willing to make every effort to help you regain your confidence with our company.

We are sorry for any inconvenience. Delays are not uncommon in our industry, especially over winter due to poor weather, working conditions, and the increased volume of work. It becomes difficult to schedule with any degree of absolute accuracy.

Regarding the shingles, we went back and corrected the problem in a timely manner.

Regarding clean up, another crew was sent to make it right.

Regarding the flat roof, each specific trade specializes in different areas of roofing.

According to Dale, one of our crew members gave inappropriate attention to his girlfriend. That comment is concerning. This is the first time that we have ever heard a complaint of this nature. Dale, if you are willing to give us your full name, address and phone number, I will personally look into this matter further.

Also, Phil Gilmore is willing to go back and do a walk through of all your concerns. He will inspect the color difference in the shingle and he will look at all the components of this project. However, responding 2 ½ years later maybe difficult to arrive at a clear understanding of this case, due to the lapse in-time. It is interesting to note that you made no comment or mentioned that the roof has not leaked since Contex’s installation; this is the most important of all.

As a courtesy, Contex Roofing is willing to extend to you a discount on any future work as a goodwill gesture, as well as, to try and regain your confidence.

I look forward to hearing from you, so let’s not point the blame, but let us try to make things right.

Sincerely,
Phil Gilmore, CET

Roof repair

My roof had been leaking into the garage for some time - by the time I realized it was leaking, there was quite a mess. I'm just glad I noticed it when I did, otherwise it could have been much worse! Phil was very thorough and knew exactly what the problem was - the roof is no longer leaking! I would recommend this company to my friends and family because I am impressed with the quality of workmanship and the service that was provided. I've included some "before" and "after" pictures with my review...

John Town Houses in Mississauga

You can tell good service when you here it directly from the home owners. Things like man these guys clean up. They are polite. I heard one of Contex management went on the roof for a final inspection as had made one small improvement that he felt was not acceptable. This made me feel there quality of workmanship was complete.

We are proud to say we have a ‘Contex Roof’

Phil and the all expert tradespeople at Contex Roofing truly put their best foot forward when they worked on our home. I had several companies come out and provide estimates, Phil was the first one who asked specific questions about what we were looking for and provided advice and solutions for our specific needs. The crew who did the roof was exceptional. They were clean, courteous and made sure to protect our garden, patio and fencing. The clean up was meticulous and the quality of the shingling and eves are easily the best in the neighbourhood. I can confidently recommend Contex to the friends, family and neighbours who have complimented us on how beautiful the finished job looks and the quality of workmanship we received. We couldn’t have asked for better service. We are proud to say we have a ‘Contex Roof’. Thank you.

Shingle roof and replace eavestroughs

Along with the shingles we replaced the eavestroughs and downspouts. Phil was able to find a good colour match for existing pieces. Some special challenges that were expertly handled were a section of roof nearly horizontal, rain barrel fitting, better flow of water between roof levels.
A year leter we had a drip near the front door. Phil made a point of coming to inspect it personally when I was home so that we could discuss it together.

flat and shingle roof, aluminum work

Contex did our roof - both flat and shingled portions, as well as subcontracting some carpentry and aluminum work on our porch. The quality seems to be very good. We had a bit of trouble with them taking care of some unfinished business, but eventually they did. One troubling incident - someone working for them hopped our neighbour's fence twice to use his hose, without permission.
