whole condo renovation

We did a whole condo renovation with Ashton Renovation in the downtown core.
Their team was so easy to work with and accommodating thru the different parts of the project.
These guys are professional in the way they do the work and in their timely communications.
The results look great and we are so pleased with the quality of the job.
We would recommend them to anyone that needs a quality, fair-priced contracting company.

Whole home renovation

Hiring a contractor can be daunting, but I have done the work for you. I found Ashton Renovations and could not be more pleased with the work, the service, the attention to detail, and the overall cost. I started with the idea of doing just a few things at my century home but over time, I ended up renovating virtually my entire house. Mark Aston and his crew were up for the challenge...including replacing every window in the house and waterproofing the foundation. One of the challenges I gave Mark was to solve staircase access from the main floor to the second. Mark ultimately proposed a solution that has become an architectural feature in the house. Ashton assembled a top-notch crew on my project from plumbers (Tony), to painters (Barry) to electricians and other trades. One of the best things about Ashton is that they are always there for you if something goes awry....which in a century home is more likely than not. Ashton has always stood behind the quality of their work and I know I have a partner in them at all times. I highly recommend Ashton Renovations for your next project.

Water Damage/Hardwood Replacement

This is the third time Ive contacted Ashton Renovations for their renovation/restoration work. With this latest disaster, Ashton was the first company I called. Their attention to detail, responsiveness, and guidance through the process was very reassuring. I didnt even consider going with the preferred restoration company my insurance company recommended. I wanted a contractor who I know would get the job done right. This is why Ive worked with Ashton time and again.

Ive also booked another reno with them for the new year. With all the concerns regarding reputable contractors right now, I highly recommend Ashton. Every time Ive worked with them, Ive been delighted with the result!

Not the service we expected or paid for.

We do not recommend working with Ashton Renovation.

Having lived in our 100-year-old home for nearly 15 years, we were particularly keen on hiring a contractor who could provide quality service, a positive customer experience, and a solid output for a kitchen renovation. Our experience did not meet our expectations:

The project began on February 5, 2024, and was completed on August 22, 2024 (nearly 7 months). It involved renovating a 12-by-14-foot kitchen, including removing one wall (non-load bearing). We began this project with an existing design (completed by a separate company), and most features were already selected (e.g., kitchen layout, cabinetry design, countertop, appliances).

There needed to be better coordination between Ashton Renovation and the cabinetry company we were asked to work with. It became apparent near the end of the project that Ashton Renovation, the cabinetry company, and we, as homeowners, were all working with different information. This led to several important details being overlooked, unnecessary frustration, and last-minute decisions that affected the desired outcome.

Mark (Lead contractor) failed to provide project oversight and management. We found his communication condescending and lacking understanding for homeowners to be without a kitchen for several months, with lengthy periods of inactivity between project tasks. He did not take accountability for project requests that were either unmet or had gone in a different direction than we had hoped for. Our concerns were often addressed by comments about his several years of experience. Despite these assertions, we did not see this experience reflected in how he communicated with us, the lack of project management and the lack of foresight in handling unexpected issues that would arise during a renovation of an older home.

We repeatedly told Mark that we had lost confidence in the process. We felt he should have shown more interest in correcting his processes or being flexible in accommodating our concerns. When we chose to withhold the remaining ~4% of the project budget (about $5,000) until the final activities were completed, he threatened to sue us despite having paid all invoices within 24-48 hours upon request.

After completing many major renovations in our home, our experience as homeowners tells us it doesn't have to be this way. We recommend finding a contractor who will value your patronage and work with you closely to get the most value for your money and time.

Company Response

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for sharing your feedback and providing us with an opportunity to reflect on your project. We appreciate your comments and regret that your experience with Ashton Renovations did not fully meet your expectations.

We understand that the extended timeline was frustrating for you. As you are aware, there were several unexpected structural and mechanical issues that surfaced during the renovation, including repairs to the subfloor, asbestos remediation, ceiling joists, framing, and HVAC modifications. These additional tasks, along with additional work that you requested with painting and electrical lighting in other parts of your home, combined with supply delays from the cabinetry provider, contributed to the longer-than-expected project duration.

At Ashton Renovations, we use Buildertrend to ensure transparent communication and project management. We maintain detailed logs, inspections, and work orders throughout every stage of the process to keep our clients informed and up-to-date. Despite these efforts, we understand that the delays affected your experience, and we sincerely apologize if our communication did not meet your expectations.

Regarding the financial aspect, we appreciate your willingness to work with us when concerns arose. Though the contract did not permit the withholding of funds in the manner suggested, we showed flexibility by agreeing to meet halfway and providing a goodwill gesture in the form of a $500 discount to demonstrate our commitment to client satisfaction.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our work and would be happy to provide photos of the completed kitchen renovation for context, as we believe the end result reflects our team's dedication and craftsmanship. It is unfortunate that the quality of the final product was not mentioned in the review, as we believe it represents the high standard we strive to deliver on all projects.

Renovations, especially in older homes, often present unforeseen challenges. We understand that this can be a stressful process for homeowners, and we always aim to work closely with our clients to navigate these situations in a positive and professional manner. We appreciate your feedback and will use this experience to improve our services moving forward.

Thank you again for your comments, and we wish you all the best.

Sincerely,
Mark Ashton

Extensive main floor open concept renovation including kitchen and 2nd floor bath

We contacted Ashton Renovations to work on our 1912 era home to convert the main floor to an open concept by removing walls, gutting the entire main floor, opening the back wall to install a large european picture window/glass door, and redesign the kitchen. Mark and Chris were excellent to work with, guiding us through the involved renovation process, from engineering drawings/permits, to demolition, working with the various trades, construction, and finishing. All of their team were nice people and true professionals. Mark and Chris managed the project and the work effectively and addressed our many questions. Chris even made a lasting friendship with Domino our cat! During the renovation, there were a couple of discovery issues and Mark worked through them with us, always promptly notifying us and detailing what options we had. They could always be trusted to address the issues with proper work which complies to code and would not entertain subpar solutions. This gave great confidence in the workmanship and quality of the result. Thanks Mark, Chris, and team...the renovated space looks absolutely fantastic!

Whole house reno

We recently entrusted Ashton Renovations with a significant transformation of our home, and the results are simply breathtaking! The project involved extensive renovations of the whole house, including four bathrooms, a complete makeover of the kitchen and the stairs, installation of sleek new hardwood flooring, and also fitting of modern trims and doors.

The entire team exhibited unparalleled professionalism. Mark effectively led the project, addressing our needs with considerable care, including liaising with the city to acquire necessary permits. Chris, Thuy, Kostas, Tony, and the rest of the trades brought our vision to life.

We wholeheartedly endorse Ashton Renovations for their exceptional quality of work and outstanding service. We would not hesitate to engage them again for future projects.

Full home renovation

Ashton renovations review

We just finished a home renovation with Ashton Renovations ~ we renovated a 60 year old home to update 2 bathrooms, add insulation where none existed and unify 2 floors. This included all new flooring, trim, new doors throughout, updated electrical where none existed and fully repainted throughout. We added several extras as the renovation progressed which Mark and Chris took in stride without batting an eyelash ~ some add ons were long standing irritants that just made our home so much more functional. Our Reno started at the onset of COVID, therefore took much longer than expected. Mark shared all Reno sources with us so we could pick out our items and receive trade discounts where possible. All of the preferred trades Mark works with are experienced and extremely professional, shout out to Bruce and his demo team, Tony and his plumbing team, Kosta and his team who completed all electrical, Will and his Dad ~ absolute masters at tile work, and Glass Ninja who installed 2 glass showers and helped revamp a 1960s stairwell, which looks exactly like the inspiration pictures I shared. Mark and Chris were very easy to work with start to finish, very responsive and always willing to provide opinion and collaborate to get the best possible outcome. Ill let them add the pictures ~ coming soon to their website, I wont be able to do it justice.

All the best Leslie & Steve
