On several occasions I have needed to repair old leaky faucets but have been unsure exactly what part was faulty and needed replacement. My preferred practice now is to remove the stem/ packing/washer and take it to Home Depot. I have always found the staff working each department (particularly Plumbing and Electrical) to be very knowledgeable both about what I need to purchase to fix the problem and where exactly to find it on their shelves.
