We're very disappointed in our moving experience with Highland. It was not an easy decision to invest in hiring movers.
We did our research, and got quotes from the top 3 companies listed on homestar.com. We chose Highland because of a referral from a colleague. We believed the higher cost would be worth the investment to have a stress-free experience. We trusted that our items would be safe with professionals, so we didn't purchase extended insurance. We moved all fragile and valuable items ourselves (electronics and artwork). We also assumed such a professional company would mean a faster move, and that we would not need to be concerned about our damage deposit with the condo board.
Instead, this was our experience:
- The move from a 2 bdrm to a 2 bdrm condo, 10 minutes apart, took 9.5 hours.
- They sent 2 movers for what we were later told needed 3 people. It was the first day for one of them and his inexperience was obvious.
- They didn't have proper equipment. With one small dolly, one mover was carrying a box at a time. They needed us to provide packing tape to wrap the couch and mattresses.
- They damaged a wall with a couch when they didn't remove the small legs that easily screw out of the base.
- The corner of the leather sofa is damaged.
- They broke our $800 coffee table. We pointed out it's value in advance. They balanced the 150 lb table on one of it's steel legs, instead of on the flat tabletop, and the leg bent and snapped off, leaving large holes in the base.
We appreciate that they chose to only charge us for a 4 hour move; that was good customer service. We're very disappointed to learn they won't compensate for the damaged coffee table. The damage wasn't the result of an accident, it was negligence and inexperience.
Highland told us our experience "is obviously not an acceptable standard for our company." If that's the case, why not extend the courtesy of compensating us for the damage resulting from a sub-standard experience?
