Basement Renovation

We hired AGM to finish our basement. Overall, the experience was good but there was a lot of room for improvement.
Lyndsie, our sales rep, was excellent and very patient during the initial quoting and planning stage. Pricing is very transparent and there were no hidden costs or fees.

The design consultation was left to the last minute and we felt rushed and pressured to make quick decisions with very small material samples. Everything came out looking beautiful, but it was a pain point that could have easily been avoided.

Our project manager was switched part way through the project without any notice. The first Project manager had very little knowledge of construction and I found myself having to explain very basic building terminology and processes when asking questions. The majority of information I was provided back was incorrect which was very frustrating.

Ricardo, our second project manager, was a pleasure to deal with. He was very knowledgeable and extremely easy to get a hold of when issues arose. He walked us through each stage and did his best to ensure work was completed on schedule.

It was our hope with hiring AGM that we would be fairly hands off with the project. We assumed that the project manager would be onsite frequently to monitor progress and catch errors, but this was not the case. The project managers visited once a week for a quick walk through and relied upon phone conversations with trades to ensure work progressed. This is not a criticism of the project manager, but of the system they work within. They are managing so many projects that they do not have the time to watch and ensure work is being done correctly. I found myself having to pay close attention to what the trades were doing and be the one to point out and correct issues throughout the project.

Overall, the trades that were sent were very skilled but they had very little time to complete their tasks. Work was very rushed and often sloppy, resulting in the trades needing to return multiple times to correct the work. It seemed very inefficient. Very few trades (if any) swept or vacuumed the jobsite after their work was completed, often citing that the next trade will clean before starting their task, which didnt happen. For example, the drywall dust from sanding was never vacuumed up before the painters came in. There were large piles of dust that were simply painted over in the window bays. There was a lack of care and attention to detail exhibited from several of the trades.

The materials and accessories selection is limited and the majority are builder grade quality. There are several items for which you are not given options and once installed, it's too late to change unless you want to pay a $950 fee. For example, the standard wall paint is a flat finish. Flat paint is impossible to clean and is a silly choice for recreational space such as a basement.....especially if you have kids. I was told (by the painter) they use it because it hides imperfections....ie. saves time on touch ups. However, In the case of my basement, there were several walls that needed to be re-coated 3 or 4 times as trades would touch the wall with their hands and left marks that could not be cleaned. With two small kids in the house, I'm seriously considering re-painting the basement myself in either eggshell or satin.
The exhaust fans in the bathroom and laundry room are another example of lack of choice. AGM uses very loud 4 sones fans. This should have had an upgrade option to quieter 0.5 or 1 sones fan.

Alex the handyman was excellent and came in at the end of the project to add the finishing touches and to correct the issues left over from the previous trades.

In the end, our finished basement looks amazing and the majority of issues along the way were corrected quickly and without any pushback. AGM is a company that stands behind their work and works hard to ensure customer satisfaction.

Primary Bathroom - Warranty Claim

After AGM completed our bathroom in 2021, our 60 month warranty period started. Chris Hewie has been our Project Manager for warranty claims and we are so happy to have had him as our point of contact. After submitting our claim in July, we started the repair work in August. It took 3 visits to fix the issue, however, Chris coordinated the work along the way around our schedule. He even came on site to inspect the issue himself. We appreciate Chris for his dedication to address our concerns and warranty claim. Thanks, Chris! 5/5 for Chris!

Basement

project manager Habib was very helpful. He listened to our concerns and calmly addressed the issues. He also made some recommendations which we incorporated. There were some initial delays due to obtaining the permit but it went fairly smoothly after that. The place looks great and we are looking forward to enjoying the basement. Thanks to Habib and the team.

Kitchen Renovation

DO NOT hire AGM Renovations! We had a kitchen project that took over 5 months to complete. We were without a working sink and cooking area for a family of five ... for 5 months! Their quality of work is sub-standard, the contractor assigned to the job has little knowledge of construction and sub-hires out the job to unknown individuals. AGM assures you there will be a project manager and a general contractor when they sign the contract with you. We never saw the project manager on site, nor spoke with them. The general contractor left the country for two months. You are expected to be home at all times as they send the sub-contractors with no notice to your home on random days of the week to do work. You never know when or who is coming into your home! The entire project was mismanaged, the work site was left dirty and unsafe with construction materials thrown outside on our porch for over 3 months. The Kitchen Renovations Manager finally, after 5 months, creates a plan to finish the project, offers compensation for the delays, and then the Operations Manager steps in and says their manager was not authorized to offer compensation. AGM does not stand by their work, offers sub-par materials, is extremely unorganized, and only wants your money. They do not make it right when problems occur and I suspect if Mike Holmes knew of their practices, he would be ashamed to be connected with them. AGM Renovations does not deserve to hide behind Mike Holmes' stellar reputation.

Dear Katie Maxwell, we firstly would like to admit that there were mistakes, and delays due to unforeseen circumstances which made the project not go as planned. We have worked with you to come to a resolution, and we have rectified the issues you had brought forward to our team. We have also provided you with a $1000 compensation for these inconveniences. We are deeply saddened and sincerely apologize as this is not the type of service we strive to provide here at AGM. We truly hope you are enjoying your beautiful new kitchen! - Your friends at AGM!

Bathroom renovation with plumbing relocation

On the plus side, they have all their own materials and fixtures so can (and did) live up to start and completion dates. Materials are high quality. Design advice is good. There is a project manager so you have a reliable contact for resolving problems.
On the negative side, the craftmanship was not there after the main restructuring was completed. To make things look nice, I dug out the embedded debris and repaired the grouting; I repaired and completed the sloppy or missing painting; I reinstalled the toilet (they missed the pipe by two inches so it flushed onto the floor) and shower head (also leaky) correctly; I repaired most mess/damage to the surrounding areas, such as chipping away at a half inch of various adhesives/cements/grouts in the garage work area; I reattached towel holders just screwed directly into the drywall.
On the really negative side, I fixed code violations and safety issues with the electrical work on a light switch and exhaust fan such as unclamped or pinched cables; connections made open in the wooden ceiling cavity; missing or incorrect screws/bolts; wires wrapped the wrong way around the screw. Properly aligning the exhaust fan venting vastly reduced its noise as well.
For the future, I will rebuild part of the exterior of the shower so it is square and fix the sloppy baseboards. Eventually, I need to scope the plumbing to see if drainage is vented to code.
The company came back to fix a weirdly curved wall, to redo the shower base so it actually drained completely, and to unbury an electrical junction hidden inside the wall.
Probably should have been 1/2 to 2/3 of the cost given how many hours I had to put in to bring it up to a normal level such as you might see in their promotional photos. Sort of half reno, half DIY in the end.
The subcontractors who did the shower glass installation were great.
