Contracting By Us

We had a bar added into our basement. The guys came in and from the estimate to the follow through of the job did an excellent job. The job and the parts involved were all included in the price. My husband and I were very happy with the overall project and have already recommended these guys to our friends.

We needed a fast basement renovation due to our busy wk schedules and arrival of our new baby. Marcel, Manny and their team provided great customer service, and were respectful of our time, and got the job done on time per their workback schedule. They were also innovative with their design ideas to make our basement space better than we originally thought it would be. We are happy with the results, and would recommend them.

We live in a Townhouse in Port Credit and have a relatively small personal common element rear interlocking patio. It was in serious need of repair; I called Marcel to attend and quote the job. He arrived the same day and provided a very competitive quote. A few days later a profession team of interlocking specialists arrived. Within four hours they completed the task. It looks fantastic, I highly recommend Marcel.

I met with Marcel [owner] October 2012 and scheduled a basement reno for the end of March 2013 which was the date I wanted.
He stopped in the night before the target start to say hello and check basement if was clear [that told me lots about his attention to detail].
Marcel gave me a quote and a three week schedule to have the basement finished [approx 75% of the total house footprint] which consisted of a great room with a kitchenette/bar area; bathroom with shower and a large walk in closet.

All the trade work had minimal mess and noise into the house fortunately because of the direct basement access through the garage. His crew were like Santa’s elves; never really saw them but they working hard all day with hammer/saw/drill. Checking nearly every night I saw tremendous progress each visit. The walls were amazingly smooth; I had some other professional complement the quality work.

What I appreciated most was that Marcel would offer very good recommendations; he has an excellent style sense. I trusted him completely when I deferred a decision to him. I was very impressed with his personal approach and proactive manner. I would get a heads up as to timing of flooring, tile, granite etc. selections. Nothing was ever too much trouble. There was a minor set back when the tiling couldn't finish the night before, I found him in my driveway at 7am with the two tiles that were the wrong shade driving off to Toronto to get replacements and with a smile on his face. Couldn't believe it! Impressive.

The job ended with all work done as promised in late April and looking fabulous. I couldn't be more pleased. I highly recommend CBU to anyone.

Marcel, Manny, and crew were wonderful to work with. My biggest fear these days is poor customer service and paying for something and not getting what I paid for -- and working with Marcel and team was the exact opposite of that. They were friendly, on time, professional, offered advice when needed and respected our ideas and wishes. We love our new basement and are thrilled with the very professional quality of the final product. Johnny worked with my husband to help implement my husband's plans for in-wall speakers and a crazy amount of outlets, panels, and the like, resulting in his dream "man cave." The bathroom is gorgeous -- makes me want to re-do all the other bathrooms in the house. They also did some extra side jobs while they were here, including installing pot lights in the upstairs hallway, closing off an unused doorway, and routing ethernet up to my second floor office. I wish they could've stayed forever and kept fixing up the rest of the house. We will definitely use Contracting By Us for our next reno job (am thinking maybe a back yard shed, or something done to our front porch next?) and we have recommended them countless times since they finished their work on our basement. Our recent purchase of an late 70's home with much of it's original 'vintage' style meant a major overhaul. Our wish list included removal of a California-style drop ceiling in the kitchen, demolition of a structural wall between the kitchen and family room, installation of pot-lights throughout the main floor, a fireplace revamp and finally skylight installation over the eating area, and new flooring.

We planned for months and had a contractor lined up in advance. When we called to tell him we were ready to get started he advised us that he was suddenly TOO BUSY!! OMG! I am very tempted to write his name here, but this is not the forum.... :-)

Christmas was around the corner, we have 2 young children, and we had 3 weeks to get this work done before new owners took over our other home. The timeline was tight and we had demolished the kitchen on our own; no running water, no electricity, no WALLS! It was bare to the studs.

Marcel came to our rescue; I had met him at the dump a few months prior and had held onto his card. What luck!!

Marcel is exactly what you look for in a general contractor. He respects your budget and ideas. He is innovative and and has a creative side to him (he had the vision for the fireplace and it is PERFECT and soooo beautiful). He also knows his stuff. For example, he pointed out a concern in our structural drawings and consulted with the engineer on the matter. Ultimately, the decision was to go with Marcel's recommendation.

Marcel knows how to get his team working... and his team is good! He brought great people to our job. All were respectful, friendly, helpful and obviously good at what they did.

Let's just say my father-in-law was hugely impressed by Marcel, and he was known to be one of the most meticulous and demanding site foreman throughout his career in construction. If he liked Marcel, I know Marcel is REALLY GOOD! Not that I needed my father-in-law to spell it out; it's obvious.

We will use Contracting By Us again for our next project without hesitation. We have passed on his number to friends already.

Our basement was caught in a time warp and needed a complete gut and renovation. After realizing that it would be too much for us to tackle ouselves we called in CBU based on a referral. I can honestly say that we are not disappointed! They were at our place when they said would be and answered every concern and comment we had during the process with care and respect.
