Sam The Handyman

We found Sam the handyman on the internet, when we were looking for a contractor to replace the flat roof on our rental building. From the very beginning, Sam was very professional and helpful in answering our many questions. The job was completed within the timeframe estimated, and we encountered no problems or disruptions to tenants in the building. During the work time, the front entrance was always maintained clear. There was small debris floating around the property during work, but completely cleaned up after job was completed. When I visited, the staff was helpful and professional. We are very happy with the professional service we received from Sam and would highly recommend their services.

I contacted this company for a chimney repair, they arrived on the exact time, I didn't need to wait. The work was great, I like what they did and the accuracy of the repair. They even cleaned up very well after the work was completed, I recommended them to a couple of my friends and they were happy as well.

I purchased a coupon from RDeals.ca. for 50 roof tile replacement. Sam (or rep) came to see the job on Wed. there were no issues of any kind even though it was a small job. We really liked him and were pleased to have found what we thought was a good contractor. 2 days later I get an e-mail from Sam telling me that he was not sure why I wanted a patch? I thought this odd as the 2 days before he was totally fine with the job and said that the job would be completed before the end of June. So, I replied that we just wanted the damaged tiles replaced because we would replace our entire roof, which is still in good repair except for a few tiles, in a couple of years. He then asked me how much I paid for my coupon? I told him $39 (remember this was HIS promotion and I had given him the promotion code), then I asked if it mattered? Now, I had every intention to pay over-time and for the materials... but he never even asked about that! He knew the promotion (his company offered it), he saw the work needed... his response? He tells me that patch jobs are not covered by their warranty. WOW! I guess this was an overnight development! Really?? So I offered to waive the warranty. He responded by sending me a refund for $39. I consider this a LUCKY ESCAPE, I've dealt with many contractors and what, I've learned is that if someone does NOT honor their word.... and if he runs his business like this I don't trust him or his warranty.... also, he is rather shortsighted as I had many other projects lined up but wanted to see how the roof patch went...I guess those will go to a REPUTABLE and honest contractor.

Be careful of Sam's work. After just one year the parging to my home and the 45 degree run-off that he built has deteriorated and broken. He refuses to come and fix the issue. I have been asking since September of 2012 and it is now June 2013. He did the original work in September 2011. I had to hire another contractor to do the job correctly and Sam refuses to provide a refund. Buyer beware. Please see this link for pictures http://samthehandyman.imgur.com

As you can see below, Sam responds to negative reviews by stating that this particular job doesn't exist in his database. Expect this kind of treatment if you have a problem with his work.

We needed a new roof but are considering renovating in the next few years. Aside from being impressed with Sam the handyman for their attention to detail from booking an appointment to getting a confirmation email and incredible conscientious service, Sam was very frank with us and instead of trying to sell us the most expensive roof gave us a practical, reasonable suggestion that we are very happy with. I would highly recommend this company.

We had Sam and his crew replace our roof about 6 months ago. While Sam was very pleasant to deal with and the roof has held up without any leaks so far, the workmanship was very sloppy.

The shingles are uneven and don’t lay flat, the edges haven’t been cut in a straight line so the roof line looks uneven. When he replaced the flashing, the new flashing is smaller in size and doesn’t cover the old flashing so you still see the worn old flashing around the edges. In addition, not all the flashing is the same colour. When compared with the neighboring houses our roof just doesn’t have the same neat finished appearance.

Sam arrived promptly with his crew and replaced all the Mortar between the bricks in the front of the house and spot repaired the other walls. They also removed the old Chimney pipe and sealed it up (as we now have a high effeciency) and removed old caulking from windows and recaulked. Great job, fast and friendly.

Nowadays, it is a blessing to find a good contractor who stands by their WARRANTY for the work done. I am so glad that I have chosen Sam the handyman and crew to repair my chimney in September 2012. Beginning of March 2012, strong winds gusting over 100 kms swept through Thornhill, few bricks on my chimney were slightly chipped. I contacted Sam; they responded immediately and came to my house to take care of the chimney repair while I was away to Vancouver for three weeks. They contacted me by e-mail telling me that once they got up there, they found more repairs were to be made. They stand by their warranty and took the initiative to do a thorough repair. When I returned home, to my surprise, the chimney has been built with matching new bricks I am so appreciative to their professionalism, excellent customer service and warranty.
