House fire

Had a fire in a wall, they were called in, by my insurance company. Electrician told us wrong things that had to be changed, he played with lights that should never of been touched. Has costed me over $1000 to wire stuff that was fine. Cleaners never cleaned proper had to come back, which was not done proper again. Long time to get straight answers. Not happy at all with this company!!!

Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Go somewhere other then here, my insurance has been told. If this happens again I don't want them used

Company Response

Please note: It was not Complete Restoration Services Electrician. The ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) noted multiple faulty wiring throughout the home that had to be corrected. Improper wiring connections is actually what caused the fire in the first place.

Additionally, our cleaners performed a very thorough cleaning of the residence in the areas directly related to the fire, while the homeowners were living at an alternate location (we have photos of the cleaning). After the homeowners had moved back, they requested we come back as they had some issues with the cleaning. When we returned, we noted there were fresh cigarette ashes throughout the home and the freshly cleaned areas.

Floor replacement due to flooding

CRS was recommended by my insurance company to replace the floating floors and doorframes in my condo due to flooding. The work took over a year to complete due to scheduling, missing/misdyed quarter round and repairs to the initial work required. The work is complete - but terrible. The photos speak for themselves.

Company Response

The repairs took over a year to complete due to the homeowner being out of the country on multiple occasions throughout the timeline of the claim. Additionally, the repair issues that the homeowner has is not related to the work of Complete Restoration Services. The concrete subfloor at the loss location is unlevel and the product the homeowner chose to cover the floor enhanced its unevenness once installed. We've had multiple engineers confirm this as well as the Insurance Company. This issue has also been brought up with the BBB, which has been ruled in our favour.

Emergency removal and rebuild of basement after drain backup

This is the sort of business that gives contractors a bad name. I have a complaint that is similar previous customer but I was stupid enough to let Complete Restoration Services string me along for nearly two months.

Our basement drain backed up and our basement flooded during the massive rain storm on July 8, 2013. Our daughter was 2 and a half months old and we were in the middle of preparing to sell our house and move while my wife was still on maternity leave. Stressful, right? Well, Complete Restoration Services made it much worse. Our insurance company sent them as the 'preferred vendor'. They came by promptly to take out the bottom 2 feet of drywall and rip up the laminate flooring in the basement - standard practice after a drain backup. However, when taking out the bathroom walls they found evidence from where rats had gotten into the wall and 'mold' (our subsequent contractor said there was none) and sealed off the bathroom without finishing the removal. That was the last work they did on the house, leaving us with a sealed-off bathroom, ripped out basement (and disconnected gas dryer for good measure). The people I spoke to were all very friendly and apparently helpful at first. They said they'd take care of the 'mold' as a minor repair on rebuilding the basement. After waiting for a couple of weeks for them to get in touch to schedule work, I called them back and tried to pin them down on when they'd do the work. They told me how busy they were and said they couldn't do anything without getting the 'rebuild estimate' from the insurance adjuster. The adjuster said he couldn't finish the rebuild estimate until CRS uploaded the bill for the removal work (makes sense). I acted as the go between, asking CRS to upload the removal bill and personally getting the rebuild estimate from the adjuster and sending it directly to CRS (not the seamless service promised for a preferred vendor).

At that point, CRS stopped returning my phone calls. Over the next few weeks I called at least 20 or 25 times and was always told that the person I was looking for 'wasn't there but they'd call me back' (they never did) or the person I was talking to 'had to check on something with someone else and would call me back' (never did). The last straw was when I called and the receptionist said 'you should talk to Garry the owner, he's here right now'. But when she went to get Garry he wouldn't take my call and told her to tell me he'd send a report to me 'early next week'. I didn't want a report: I wanted a simple answer as to when they would do the work. I never got an answer (or a report, for that matter). I got in touch with a different contractor I had do work in my house before, and he started the work a couple of weeks later and did a great job. He showed me inside the bathroom walls and there was no mold. Nothing. It looks like saying there is mold was either a way to stop working when they ran out of time or a way to keep us tied to them until they could get to our job. As far as CRS knows, I'm still waiting for the (in case you're reading this: you're fired!).

These insurance jobs are extremely good money and it looks like CRS had more work than it could handle but is greedy so they keep stringing people along until they can get to the job. They also shouldn't take so many claims from the insurance company if they can't handle them. We almost missed the Fall real estate season and opportunity to move because of them (putting an offer on a house tomorrow). My advice: if your insurance company assigns you Complete Restoration Services as their 'preferred vendor', look for someone else right away. Use Homestars and find yourself and honest, trustworthy contractor.

emergency clean up; basement renovation

Complete Restoration was appointed by my insurance company to clean up a backed up sewer, then provide an estimate for basement renovation. The company did the emergency management in a timely manner, but then took 3 weeks to provide an estimate for the renovation, and did not return any of my phone calls while I was waiting for the estimate, or subsequent to the estimate being provided. I had to fight with my insurance to have them approve another contractor to do the renovation. Complete Restoration caused complete aggravation. Very irresponsible and terrible customer service. Buyer beware!

Company Response

This loss occurred during the catastrophe flooding of July 7th, 2013. Emergency services are always our first priority to mitigate the loss as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. Unfortunately, thousands of homes were affected in this flooding and all of our estimators were in the field performing inspections for the entire month of July. The estimate was provided as quickly as possible within the insurance companies catastrophe guidelines. It was our main priority to get all homes to a safe and livable state as quickly as possible.

Basement flooding cleanup

I was the unfortunate victim of basement flooding due to flash flooding in the neighbourhood. They were helpful, and cleaned up the entire basement. They used proper equipment, it only took a day, and everything was cleaned up and dry!

New flooring

The services far exceeded my expectations. Complete Restorations communicated the process of having my floors re-done the whole way through. They packed up all my belongings, had everything moved into storage, completed my floors and moved everything back within 4 days! Everyone was very professional and easy to get a hold of throughout the process when I had questions. My condo has never looked better and the floors are extremely beautiful. I would highly recommend their services; they are fast, professional and of the highest quality!

Fire restoration, additional renovations

CRS was recommended by my insurance adjuster after a fairly major fire in my basement. They gutted and rebuilt the basement and painted the whole house. They also did/coordinated some tile work and a countertop replacement in the kitchen and window replacement on my behalf- this was not part of the insurance claim.

This is a family company that is highly ethical, hardworking and kind. I was extremely happy with the work they did and the way they handled interactions with me. They are honest and don't attempt to rip off the insurance company or the homeowner. They were efficient and did high quality work. They work with good vendors for external services like plumbing, stonework and windows. I highly recommend them.

Home restoration after fire

Matt & Gary at Complete Restoration were referred to us when we lost a good portion of our home to a fire a couple of years ago. We chose them as our insurance company approved vendor for our house restoration.

The level of service we received was overall very good. Matt especially was very friendly and accomodating throughout the entire confusing rebuild process. Gary, the owner, however comes across as condescending at times but he is very knowledgeable in the business & gets the job done.

The quality of work completed in the home was excellent without a doubt. The Complete Restoration team are very detail oriented and did a great job on all of the work done, especially the exterior restoration/rebuild, flooring, drywalling & painting.

Because the majority of the work they did for us was covered by our insurance company I won't quote the overall repair #s as they would be inflated. Based on the items we did pay for out of pocket though, I would say that they are on the higher end of the scale when it comes to contractors. That being said though, they do high quality work. Sometimes (most of the time, in life) you get what you pay for.

garage demo and reconstruction

Scope of work was teardown and replacement of garage due to fallen trees. Complete Restoration was recommended by my Insurance Company. Work started in 2007, not completed until 2010. Each city inspection failed and company was required to make fixes. Final inspection failed (not built to code, did not match city-approved engineer's drawings, built in wrong location too close to property line, etc.). Company ordered to tear down structure, remove new 6 inch concrete pad, relocate as approproate and rebuild. During all this time, construction materials (assembled roof & walls) filled my yard, and all contents were covered with makeshift tarps throughout all seasons. Completely unprofessional, poor workmanship, missed deadlines and undertakings, and repeated attempts to blame the engineer and the insurance rep. I have nothing positive to say about the experience - that goes for the workers and the office staff.
