Goodwood, Poor Windows

Just purchased a home in Goodwood, Ontario. Of the 28 windows over 50% of them have cracked seals and several of the handles are broken. It seems odd that SO MANY or the seals are broken. Some windows are so cloudy that you can't see through them. We keep the shutters closed most of the time. I noticed that all windows were produced by DECORA in 2002.
If you are purchasing a home or plan to change your windows I would ADVISE AGAINST using this company and check the window stamps before you buy a home. If you are a builder, don't put these in new homes. Oh, and the DECORA Company phone number is no longer in service. I wonder if they are? Time to make a drive to Concord... Good Luck!

What could this company do to improve their services?
Build a window seal that does not leak. That would solve the problem. Engineering, and Testing of products should come before selling to contractors and home owners.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Don't use DECORA windows. Period. I first learned of the company when I looked at the window stamps in my broken seal windows. The view was cloudy but I was able to make out the company name D E C O R A right below the broken seals...

Decora Windows in Fernbrook built home

We upgraded to have casement windows throughout our home build by Fernbrook 8 years ago.
Last year I had to replace a broken window which had a faulty seal, also replaced our front doors, and now we have another 4 windows with fautly seals.
Seems like Decora is no longer in business, as their phone # is no longer in service.
Builders need to due their due diligence before working with companies like Decora, as it seems like there have been complaints about Decora for many years.

Windows Whole House

The house is less than 3yrs old and already these Decora made windows are defective. I have 11 panes that are leaking due to faulty seals. Many complaints about this company and new homeowners left with replacing literally new windows.

Here are pics of this mishap!

broken window

i cannot emphasize too much why this company deserves all the scorn heaped on it.

i have a new home and glass on one of the windows was broken. sounds like a simple fix right ? but leave it to decora to blow this into a major complication.

first they email a request for sizing (measurements), which we promptly returned to them. weeks of silence follows next, with not a word. when we try to contact the rep (natasha), we're told that she's on bereavement leave.

fine, we understand but you're telling me that in a company like this, there's no one else that can answer questions or pick up the ball in her absence ?

finally, after weeks of trying to get any word (and leaving messages), we get word and a workman is sent. should be end of story, but they gave the guy the wrong information ! should not have even bothered completing their form in the first place (the guy told us that we shouldn't have even been sent the form in the first place).

we tried going with someone else, but they bailed out on us. please keep in mind that i am chinese when reading the next sentence to keep it in context - if you have a distant chinese relative and they say they're going to do something and they keep saying yes, yes, yes ... nail them on paper and get a firm, no backing out commitment. otherwise, you'll be left out when you try getting work from them.

back to decora, we kept up the contact regularly. their only response besides not taking our call is to ask us to come into THEIR office, way across town !

and this is not just a junior level employee problem, but i suspect that it extends up to their managment.

it's not like i'm asking for the world. i know i'm asking for reasonable response. this is their product and their service because they put their own window using their own people. it's still under warranty and i'd like them to honour their warranty. tell me when we can arrange a mutually agreeable day and time. honour that commitment.

this should be Business 101, but only decora could screw this up and royally. i could go to the zoo and grab a bunch of monkeys that could do a better job (even without the training).

What could this company do to improve their services?
put up a warranty page on their web site (i think five years and counting is too long a time to wait for that) take phone calls from customers answer questions from customers treat customers like people the same way they would want to be treated (unless they LIKE being mistreated, but then there's no accounting for taste) stand behind their products - it's easy to talk the talk, but let's see you walk the walk
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
AVOID decora unless you like your project to go overtime and over-budget or you're family or friends with the boss USE decora if you enjoy spending hours fruitlessly trying to get a hold of them, thrive on frustration, anger and helplessness or feel up to a challenge

Defective new windows

Built a new home and the windows from DECORA were complete garbage. One cracked ,cranks broke, nails sticking out of the wood finiish. There employee fixed the nail problem by covering them with silicone. The seals went in about half the windows before they were not even 4 years old. There employee came measured for new glass and was never heard from again. The homebuilder Mountainview claims they have taken Decora to court and are ordering replacement windows through another suplier. I have been waiting 2 years now. As all the other people have said....Don't touch this company.....Paying twice for new windows doesn't make sense,Unless there product improves they shouldn't even be allowed on the market.

Sub-standard Doors

Decora switched high end doors that we paid for with sub-standard doors and never provided us with the monetary difference ..After numerous calls and us getting nowhere with them, the only alternative is to sue them. They are sleazy.. do not deal with them.

Unethical, Crappy Products

After installing their products in our new home, the window and door cladding failed after only 3 years. It not only warped, but discoloured. The company acknowledged the product is defective, but has avoided my repeat attempts to get them to replace it. They won't step up to fix their crappy products - STAY AWAY!

New house completely fitted out with Decora windows and external doors.

DO NOT TOUCH DECORA. EVER!!!
Does anyone out there have a copy of their actual warranty, as their web site has a link for it that goes nowhere.
Also does anyone know of any tade ossociation that they belong to, or claim to belong to?
The company is total rubbish and their products are worse. Having paid over half a million dollars for a house we did not expect to have at least one pane in every window in the house replaced due to poor quality construction by Decora. We did not expect that they would have fitted windows into frames which were so badly out of square that they would not close properly. We did not expect that the replacement windows would in turn need replacing because they were defective as well. We did not in our wildest nightmares think that their fitters would have installed a broken patio door frame, and then hidden it with a strip of plastic so that it only started leaking water into our basement after two years, at which point they refused to come and fix it as it was out of warranty.
Deal with Decora at your own risk, you have been warned.

Windows by Decora Windows

My husband and I purchased a Summitview Home back in 2002 and we have noticed in the past couple of years that the windows have severe condensation in between the window panes. It is only the windows that open (crank windows) which I found kinda odd. I called them to see if it is still under warranty, as far as I have seen most windows come witha 10 - 15 year waranty...Decora only has a 5 year warranty so the receptionist told me. I think this is ridiculous as it is only the windows that open, so that means that something is wrong with those windows...so why doin't they guarantee customer satifaction? Builders try and get the best deal for their pocket not caring about the consumer....That's what I can see...Unfortunately they will not help us and offered their personal "Mr. Fixit" to come and look at the windows for a small cost....Yeah Right!
Whatever you do make sure you get the warranty on paper and make sure that it is valid for the 10 - 15 year warranty...Not their supposed 5 year...
